Coaching as a Catalyst for Leadership Development In Academic & Corporation Education
     Teaching/Practice/International

Moderator: Jude G. Olson, U. of Dallas
Participant Panelist: Matthew Eriksen, Providence College, School of Business (new peer coaching paper in Journal of Management Education!)
Participant Panelist: Robin Frkal, Nichols College
Participant Panelist: Erek Ostrowski, Assumption College

We invite teachers, coaches and managers to explore how the use of coaching can enhance the development of leaders in both academic and corporate education settings-specifically focusing on strategies of peer coaching, group coaching, vertical development and facilitating individual development. We will examine the learning that occurs in coaching through the discovery, application and integration of new knowledge sparked by collaborative learning, mentoring, self-directed learning, social learning, reflective learning, adult learning, experiential learning, and transformative learning. These learning processes also align with the core competencies of the coaching process, identified by the International Coach Federation, as: creating awareness, active listening, powerful questioning, designing actions and managing progress and accountability. Coaching, then, can be a catalyst to help our students learn and internalize frameworks for addressing future challenges on their own to increase their leadership effectiveness. Our group of panelists, who are both teachers and coaches, will discuss: how integrating coaching in leadership development programs can enhance the learning experience for managers, why coaching may help develop leadership competencies and vertical development, how managers will be able to apply those skills back on-the-job with their own employees to achieve their personal and business related goals, help session participants identify next steps to integrate coaching into their own leadership development programs in academic or corporate settings, and describe directions for further research.  Handouts with tips for implementing coaching programs will be available...
