Hello everyone, it's a pleasure to belong to the MED division. I teach Corporate Social Responsibility at the University of Guelph in Canada. My specific interests lie in the intersections of project management, accountability, and social entrepreneurship with a focus on teaching and learning to undergraduate students.  My co-authors and myself received the Barry Armandi Award for Best Student Paper in MED in 2016 and since then we continue to research the challenges of teaching complex concepts to students.

I am very happy to be part of this group and looking forward to hearing the interests of my fellow members!
    Have a wonderful summer!

    Hi everyone,

I am Anna Rakowska, Associate Professor of M. Curie Sklodowska University in Lublin, Poland. Unfortunately  this year I cannot  be with you in Chicago. I am very sorry for this. But next  year plan for sure to attend AOM conference and of course meet all of you.

My research focuses on employee competency potential in the context of diversity of HR (especially age, gender, country).  Also, I am interested in problems of "unlocking" the potential of women managers. Another area of my interest is – how we as academics can develop future skills among our students. How best we can prepare them to meet new labor market challenges – as employees and managers.

    Kind regards

    Anna

    Greetings MED!

I've been away from AOM for a bit, but I am glad to be back.

My name is Jason Fertig.  I'm an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Southern Indiana.  More than anything, I enjoy helping students develop themselves and their leadership capabilities.  This led me to a research interest in studying millennials and Gen Z.  I have a keen interest in having my scholarship and teaching compliment each other.

Most recently, I've collected DISC profile data for our students here in Evansville.  From experience, there is a love/hate thing with such instruments amongst our field, but if anyone is interested in dialoguing about teaching and scholarship related to millennials and Gen Z, I'd love to chat.

Enough about me though, I don't always like talking about myself.  I'd love to learn more about everyone else....

    Best,
    Jason

    Hello,

I have been a long-time member of MED and as of July 1, I "retired" to Professor Emeritus of Management. My colleagues and I have been publishing on employee-owned companies that have a high-involvement culture with an emphasis on innovation. To shorten that explanation, we coined the term shared entrepreneurship and defined it as "An ethical, dynamic, empowering, freedom-based process where (1) everyone is encouraged to share innovative ideas (2) then supported with appropriate resources to develop the ideas and (3) enabled to share in the rewards of success." So far we have published the following articles on this subject this year:

I started teaching about shared entrepreneurship over 40 years ago. At that time, the only case study available for this topic was about Lincoln Electric. About 30 years ago, I was lucky enough to meet people from W. L. Gore & Associates and wrote a case study about it. Things took off from there. I liked teaching about such companies and students like learning about such companies.
If you have never taught about such companies, as an old advertising slogan said, "Try it, you might like it." If your students are like mine, they will.
I started my career looking for a profession and found an avocation. I wish you all success.

    Hello everyone,

My name is Roeland van Straten, a scholar-practitioner from the Netherlands who may be somewhat of an odd duck in this group. In everyday life I actually work as strategy consultant, but I have always been very interested in conceptualizing my work and in improving strategy teaching. For that reason I always tried to combine the strategy practice with lecturing on financial-strategic decision making.

In 2017 something great happened: two universities offered to help me in getting my PhD based on a manuscript I had written in which I tried to answer the question "How may one think strategically?". This manuscript incorporated everything I consider to be fundamental in strategic thinking, and it combines fundamental notions from analytic philosophy, epistemology, systems thinking and ontology with two decades of experience in corporate finance, private equity and strategy consulting. Luckily it proved to be very well supported by the literature, so I was able to obtain my PhD within the year.

Currently I am working on articles to get it 'out there' (because it went so fast I did not have time to publish anything), but for anyone interested, here is some more information: the answer I present in my thesis takes on the form of 'A Model for Firm-Specific Strategic Wisdom'. This model is an explicit, abstract, intellectual theory of synthesis and design, and it can be taught in full. In its most practical form it is an overview of 49 questions that guide any strategists from strategic 'ignorance' to strategic 'wisdom' (as state in which the obtained case-specific knowledge can be applied), showing how they can make joint use of knowledge from theory and practice along this thinking exercise. Effectively it shows how the 'story of a firm' that needs to be told to enable the demonstrating of wisdom is a story in seven chapters, whereas each chapter consists of the same seven sections that must be addressed, only from different perspectives (hence, 49 sections in total). The model offers a detailed and well-grounded solution for integrative strategy teaching, and (as the perspectives reflect the need for justification of what must be said) it also offers many opportunities for critical reflection using rich domain-specific content. The model's visualization can be put on the wall showing all elements that make up the strategic thinking process, and therewith the building blocks of the mental model we must construct, and which effectively make up the business world when it comes to strategic thinking. In that sense, it is somewhat like the periodic table in chemistry as the overview presents all discernible elements (or so I claim).

I hope the above is not seen as presumptious as I truly hope many strategy teachers will find in my work a solution to some of the problems as identified by the literature. What I can say is that it is well supported by the literature and it works in practice. Awaiting publication, I put some information on this website Roeland van Straten - A Model for Firm-Specific Strategic Wisdom.

I plan to submit a proposal for a PDW in which I could demonstrate how the design enables integrative strategy teaching. Until then, I am looking to engage with anyone who is interested in prescriptive theoretical work on strategic thinking and on integrative strategy teaching, so to anyone who is: please send me a LinkedIn invite.
