    Dear MED colleagues,

I would like to propose a session for TLC on Competency Based Learning or Competency Based Education.  I searched last year's program and did not find a single discussion of the topic.  I have been reading Rasmussen, Northrup and Colson's (2017) Handbook of Research on Competency Based Education.  Hershey, PA: IGI Global.

Is anyone else interested in having a session on this topic?  It is particularly applicable to online programs.  Full implementation allows students to select courses and take as much time as they need to complete. Partial implementation breaks courses down into short modules and allows students to take as many modules as they like in a term.  That way if they finish one part quickly, they con move on to the next without waiting for the next term.

If you are interested, please send me a note at james_spee@redlands.edu

    See you in Vancouver!

    James,

Given the transition of business and management curriculum to online courses, competency-based learning is relevant. Also, the profile of the student's attracted to online learning, also referred to as asynchronous requires that faculty be professionally developed. This does not necessarily need to be a TLC session unless the MED division decides that there are other priorities. All of my courses are online and the class sizes are getting larger at my university (48), with students with different sets of needs and requiring flexible deadlines. It was amazing that I had two sections and only one withdrawal. I taught a course last session using a debate model that was arduous to grade and get students to post discussions in the correct thread and substantively. Different timing and coordination from the professor when grading and giving feedback compared to when I was teaching on campus is required. I have received great resources from MOBTS to use with online teaching in the areas of classroom management, shortcuts, for grading, and giving effective feedback. Dr. Wanda Cousar
