    Posted 07-22-2024 08:41

Isn't it important to encourage students to learn AI methods such as ChatGPT-4o to prepare them for the real world of business? How can we do so ethically? If students use AI to generate text for papers, writing assignments, etc., is it ethical to use applications such as Quillbot to paraphrase the AI-generated text? Of course, we need to check references to avoid hallucinations, but is requiring students to include in-text citations that match real references sufficient? Is requiring students to declare how they used AI enough? Is GPTZero sufficiently accurate to detect AI-generated content, or are there too many false negatives and false positives? What are the best practices and recommendations for using AI in teaching?

    Hi Richard,
you are asking great questions, and if you're interested I'm happy to connect to discuss more detail. In this public posting, I'll share a few things that are perhaps more relevant to a general audience: (1) we must not only teach students to use genAI, but to be able to demonstrate how they add to the process of what is generated by AI... essentially we need to help students prepare to go more quickly into what may have previously been described as more senior level, supervisory roles. If students can only prompt AI to create a deliverable, those students are stifling their own career paths. Once they understand this, some academic integrity concerns will also be reduced. (2) AI is a tool, and tools are appropriate or inappropriate given the context. There is no single answer of when something like Quillbot is (not) used ethically. Professors need to be very deliberate about WHY AI is or is not allowed. (3) I am giving a talk on the topic of best practices at the upcoming AoM/TLC conference with a colleague, but if you are unable to attend let me know and I'll share some highlights!

    Hi all,

For all of you interested in AI and Management education I attach the MED PDWS above but also hope to see you all at our MED keynote which explores this AI topic and digitally-mediated management education.

MED Keynote Plenary: Can we eat real food with synthetic spoons? – thoughts on digitally mediated management learning and education (session 1556)
    Monday, August 12, 2024, 14:00 – 15:00 CT
    Hyatt: Crystal A

Speaker: Prof. Dirk Lindebaum: Editor-in-Chief: Academy of Management Learning & Education

The dangers of synthetic learning and teaching will reduce our motivation and ability to acquire first-hand experiences and cope with vital adaptations in the real-world, both of which interfere with everyday (social) practices of managers at work. This plenary proposes two crucial mechanisms through which digitally mediated MLE can transform into its synthetic incarnation.

Key questions that preoccupy Prof. Lindebaum are that he sees that "the future is here already, at least in terms of how AI and ChatGPT not only affect processes and outcomes at work and in wider society but actually shape reality. When technology shapes reality, it is vitally important to understand what kind of design assumptions are at play, whose assumptions and values inform the design of the technology, what outcomes can be observed from that, and who is affected by these outcomes.
