to critical management education
    and organization learning

    ...for learning that transforms!

Praxis, Inquiry & The Performative Arts: A crucible for transformative education and learning

In business settings and management education, the conscious application of adult learning theory - transformative learning (TL) - has emerged as an exciting methodology for broadening perspectives and fostering personal and organization transformations. TL is being embraced as a means of teaching for personal development through intentional action. As an adult learning methodology it actively incorporates reflection, dialogue & inquiry and the performance arts (e.g., improvization). This session introduces a pedagogy and a structured approach for developing soically responsible managers, leaders and learners.

The panel of presenters – actionable scholars who are OD consultants and Graduate Faculty actively incorporate Transformative Learning to support individual and organizational learning efforts:

    1) with leaders & managers from 50 countries working in Asia, Africa & Middle East.

    2) as a learning application through the participatory arts (improvization, yoga, sculpturing etc) in organization development methodology.

    3) in the latest approaches to supporting diversity efforts creating inclusive cultures requiring new skills for shifting habits of mind and habits of relating.

    4) as a crucible for transformation in critical management studies and graduate education.

Drawing from numerous streams of theory, research and practice including critical management studies, communicative and emancipative education, transformational leadership, cross-cultural communication, organization development, communities of inquiry, feminist theory, improvisational arts, and mindful inquiry the presenters have created a workshop that fully engages participants in personally experiencing this approach to transformative education.

This PDW will incorporate dialogue and inquiry, improvisation, case study and scholarly representations designed to engage hearts and minds, and encourage dialogue as we journey with the participants to introduce the theory and practice of transformative learning to a range of settings.

As a result of attending the session, PDW participants will:

    • Experience practical applications providing evidence to the impact of praxis, inquiry and the performance arts in design and delivery of MD, OD, and CME

    • Build relationships amongst the community of learners who attend the workshop sharing knowledge and experiences

    • Reflect on how conscious integration of TL in the academy and organizations will strengthen leaders and organizations.
