Subject: IFIP-WG9.2 NAMUR AWARD 2002 Nominations

    Dear Mr., Mrs., Ms.,

Working Group 9.2 of IFIP-TC9 concerned with Computers and Society has
created the NAMUR AWARD. This award, biennial, is to be accorded for an
outstanding contribution to the awareness of social implications of
information and communication technology. The purpose of the award is to
draw attention to the need for an holistic approach in the use of
information technology in which the social implications have been taken into
account. The contribution can be in the form of a publication, design,
lecture, project or achievement of any kind within the spirit of the NAMUR
    AWARD.

My purpose in writing to you is to ask you to draw again your attention to
this award in your Society, Technical Committee or Working Group and ask
your members for nominations to be sent before December 11th, 2000. More
detailed information is attached (same information and nomination form as on
    our web site).

The 6th IFIP-WG9.2 Namur Award, in 2002, coincides with the XXVth
anniversary of IFIP-WG9.2: it will be a good opportunity to stress again our
aims and scope which still define our "Social Accountability of Computing."

The NAMUR AWARD 1991 has been granted to Professor Joseph WEIZENBAUM for his
outstanding contribution to the field of computer science, published widely
in both English and German. In 1993, it was attributed to Dr. Riccardo
PETRELLA, Head of the CEC-FAST Programme for his pioneering studies and
actions on issues related to social sciences within the CEC research and
development activities. In 1996, it was attributed to Carlos-Alberto AFONSO,
on behalf of the AlterNex Community (Brazil), for their real service to
civil society in networking NGOs and their commitment to social justice,
sustainable social and economic development. In 1998, it was granted to
Professor Gunilla BRADLEY, of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm,
Sweden, and the University of Ume and Mid Sweden University, for her work
as a pioneer within interdisciplinary research concerning IT and its impacts
and the interrelations between techniques, organisations and humans.
Finally, in 2000, it was given to Professor Simon ROGERSON from the Centre
for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR) of the De Montfort
University, Leicester, UK, for his pioneering researcher on ethics of
computing and information and communication technology.
