    Dear Doctoral Student Academy Members:

Please join us at the Academy of Management meetings for the fifth Critical
Management Studies Workshop (CMSW) and Doctoral Consortium, to be held on
    August 9-11, 2002.

The Critical Management Studies Workshop is an Academy interest group that
serves as a forum for the expression of views critical of established
management practices and the established social order. It brings together
people from many Academy divisions to promote (a) critical scholarship as an
essential component of the life of the Academy; (b) teaching that encourages
broader, deeper, and more critical understanding; and (c) active political
    engagement.

As part of the CMSW program, we will host a doctoral consortium, consisting
    of three sessions:

    (1) Friday August 9, 3:00 - 6:00 - A CMS Tutorial: "Fundamentals of
    political economy"

Building on the success of last year's tutorials on "Power and Politics,"
students and faculty interested in this topic are invited to attend an
overview tutorial on political economy. Ralph Stablein of Massey University
in New Zealand will chair the session. This session is open to students and
    faculty.

    (2) Friday August 9, 7:30pm-9:30pm - "A focus on careers"

Centering on a discussion sparked by remarks on career issues faced by
critical scholars by an invited panel of faculty members, during this
session students will meet and learn about each others' experiences,
ambitions and concerns. Students will hear from, and have opportunities to
discuss issues with, the following faculty members:

    - Erica Foldy (Assistant Professor at the Wagner School of Public Service at
NYU (on leave); Post Doctoral Fellow at Harvard Business School; Researcher
at the Center for Gender in Organizations, Simmons Graduate School of
    Management)
    - David Jacobs (American University)
    - Ralph Stablein (Massey University)
    - Joanne Martin (Stanford University)

    (3) Sunday August 9, 9:30-11 am, Doctoral Workshop on Research

    > During this session, small groups of students will be matched with a faculty
    > member with whom to discuss their research interests and brainstorm ways to
    > approach these topics. The following is a partial list if faculty who will
    > serve as research mentors in 2002:

    - Diane Swanson (Kansas State University)
    - Ann Cunliffe (California State University, Hayward)
    - Barbara Townley (Edinburgh University)
    - Martin Kilduff (Pennsylvania State University)
    - David Boje (New Mexico State University)
    - Judi Marshall (University of Bath)
    - Joanne Martin (Stanford University)

To participate, please pre-register with Terry Porter at
terryp@som.umass.edu by July First. Please include the following:

o Your name and contact information
o Whether you would like to attend the Friday afternoon tutorial
    "Fundamentals of Political Economy."
o A one paragraph biographical sketch (and c.v. -- optional)
o A statement of your research interests (up to 5 pages long) which we can
share with faculty mentors prior to the workshop. This statement should
highlight a topic of research design problem you wish to focus on in
conversation with your assigned "research mentor" (This can be sent to
terryp@som.umass.edu separately if you wish, by July 15.)
o Cost for the consortium is $20, and is payable on site.

Thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you in Denver.
