_______________

Kathy Lund Dean

Kathy has been a long time contributor to MED, and to the broader foundations of Management Education Scholarship on a global scale. Her contributions to the field are too numerous to list, so instead I will focus on three key areas to give an indication of why we feel it is important to recognise her work.

The first is the development of publishing in the field, notably at the Journal of Management Education. Kathy’s contribution has been pivotal in helping JME to be recognized internationally as the leading outlet for practical contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning, as well as an outlet that pushes forward the boundaries of management education research and debates about policy and ethics. Her contributions to the other main journals in the field have been notable, including an exemplary contribution to Academy of Management Learning and Education and widespread editorial board member and referee contributions.

The second area is the development of the profession of management education. We all know that management educators have complex portfolios of work, and Kathy has contributed to the development of our profession across many of these key areas. Examples include a number of landmark monographs that help guide journal editors in their work, shape course design and assessment, and frame professional ethics for academic staff. Kathy’s outstanding contribution as a guide and mentor in our profession was recognised with a Fulbright award which allowed her to share her expertise on the global stage, including focused developmental work in the UK, New Zealand and Japan.

The third area is Kathy’s own scholarly contribution to management education research and the scholarship of teaching and learning. There can be few scholars with such a distinguished record in this field. Notably, the majority of Kathy’s work has been collaborative and her collaborators keep coming back – above and beyond all of the intellectual and professional contributions that lead us to honour Kathy today, it is a real pleasure to recognise someone who is so great to work with.

Jeanie Forray

Jeanie has been a friend to MED and a key connection to our valued partners for many years. Management education is a field that is more collaborative than competitive, and Jeanie’s long-term contribution has been both within MED and considerably beyond it.

Through her work at MOBTS and at key journals, Jeanie has demonstrated an exemplary long-term commitment to the field which has, at times coincided with key leadership positions in her institutional career. Her CV overflows with service contributions at every level, from outstanding reviewer contributions at MED to key leadership roles in the field. Jeanie’s long-term contribution to our friends and partners at MOBTS stands out here – as a long term board member and fellow, and as a former President of that organization. We see MOBTS as one of our key partners in the mission to research, educate and inspire and Jeanie has been a key figure in that partnership.

But Jeanie’s contribution has not just been about commitment and connection, but also about creativity – in ways that have created new opportunities for scholars focussed on management education research and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has been involved in the foundation of two journals which have provided new opportunities in our field – Organization Management Journal, and Management Teaching Review. To help ensure that dedicated management education careers are better recognized, outlets that allow us to show our unique contributions are absolutely pivotal.

Jeanie’s work in crafting space for others to show their contributions – and to allow all of is in the field to develop, share and learn from these contributions – extends to book publishing too. Jeanie is co-editor of the book series Teaching Methods in Business which includes, to date, eight volumes covering topics as diverse as group and team work, simulations and arts-based management education. Many of you joining us today are contributors to this series, so you know how important these opportunities can be.

We have just scratched the surface of Jeanie’s contributions, and we are delighted to honour not just her work but the spirit of collaboration and kindness that underpins her commitment to our field.
