    Hi colleagues,

I have a student doing research on bullying in the workplace in arts
organisations (in the UK). Finding literature on this in a British
context has been virtually impossible, but I would like to ask you
for some advice/suggestions on literature and/or web-sites on
    bullying in general (non-arts).

    With many thanks in dvance.

    Hi Ana,

The classic book is Andrea Adams' "Bullying at Work" London: Virago
1992. ISBN 1-85381-542-X I did a workshop with her while I was at the
BBC. It was Andrea's belief that bullying is endemic in arts
organisations as it also is in the catering business - my own experience
as a film maker would bear this out to some extent.

Andrea died in 1995 but a trust has been set up to continue her work:

    http://subnet.virtual-pc.com/~ni407290/andrea-adams/index.html

A more recent book, "Bully in sight: How to predict, resist, challenge
and combat workplace bullying Overcoming the silence and denial by which
abuse thrives" by Tim Field, ISBN 0 9529121 04, is said to carry on
where Andrea's book left off but I haven't read it so can't offer any
    thoughts on its quality:

If you want any more info on bullying at work policies, contact me off-
list (I have experience of working on harassment at work schemes at both
BBC and Littlewoods - two of the leaders in this field)

    Best wishes,

    Richard.

the Wall Street Journal, US midwest edition, had a front page piece on the
problems of teachers in Silicon Valley, CA. Some parents' behavior borders
on/is bullying of a 'supplier' by a 'customer.'

And If you feed me a couple pints, I'll tell you about some students I am
    faced with just now, too.

these may not be arts organizations, but that doesn't change the nature of
    the interaction :)

Important topic. It is not one I have studied in depth so I cannot offer
references other than those already mentioned. I do have some experience of
the issue from several vantage points and offer that:
    - it is critical to define the point on the continuum from insensitivity to
    brutality that one wishes to focus on;
    - bullying is not a top down construct any more than power is
    - organizational sanctioning of nuanced bullying is rife regardless of the
    field of endeavour
    - if the topic is to be explored fully, then issues of race, ethnicity,
gender, sexual orientation, religion, classism, ageism and the full range of
us><them schema deserve attention. I caution that orientation and ageism
are too often ignored with the result that bullying in these areas
flourishes more openly than in relation to gender, for example, in many
environments in this part of the world.

I hope you will share more on the project as it evolves. Your student might
find Margaret Cannon's _The Hidden Empire: Racism in Canada_ interesting in
relation to the subtleties at play and the enabling nature of
    organizational/societal context.
