Conference Announcement & Call for Stream Convenors
3rd International
Critical Management Studies
Conference
7 - 9 July 2003
Lancaster University,
Management School, Bailrigg, Lancaster, UK
The CMS conference is an exciting and stimulating environment for
reflecting, discussing and theorising critically on different matters of
interest in accounting, marketing, managing, organising, financing,
living, operationalising, learning (etc.). The Conference has been
described with many
metaphors: a tent where nomadic people meet, a broad church with plural
voices, an occasion for meeting other people with critical agendas
(a.k.a. 'critters').
The Third CMS conference theme is: 'Critique and Inclusivity: Opening
the Agenda'. 'Stepping back', 'getting some distance', 'going beyond',
are some of the images in the English language that seem to suggest a
contradiction between critique and inclusivity. What is the relation
between critique and inclusion? Can we be critical and inclusive? What
are the implications of this suggested tension for management and
organisation studies? Who includes what for whom? Who or what is
excluded by inclusivity? Is inclusivity a form of totalitarianism?
We wish to address a variety of issues explored within and between
diverse specialisms of management in ways that interrogate established
agendas and go beyond them. These range from diversity to globalisation,
from labour process to philosophy, from technology to sexuality. We
welcome contributions from many
stand-points: marxism, feminism, environmentalism, labour process
theory, post-structuralism, post-colonialism, post-development theory,
queer theory, critical realism, etc.
The theme problematises the field of our broader existence and opens up
the debate to policy makers, opinion-formers and others situated in
fields other than CMS. We aim to facilitate such openings in the form
of plenaries and workshops and hope to enable a dialogue in thinking
towards a different world and different possibilities for emancipatory
practices.
CALL FOR STREAM CONVENORS
On these very broad lines, and as in previous years, we invite proposals
from stream convenors who will organise and co-ordinate streams within
the conference.
Prospective stream convenors need to drop us an outline proposal for a
stream by January 31st 2002 by email to
Teresa.Wisniewska@lancaster.ac.uk who will be the main point of contact
between the conference organisers and stream convenors
1. Proposals should provide a Title, a skeletal Idea, and the names of
3
co-Convenors who intend to work together on the stream. Ideally the
three co-convenors will be drawn from different continents with their
own networks of contacts but other models may be equally viable in
attracting a diversity of contributions
2. By early February 2002, we will provisionally decide the streams to
be
included in the conference
3. We will then ask the prospective stream convenors to work up their
idea in
more detail, and to send us a final proposal by end of February
4. By mid-March we will make the final selection of streams and let
all who
made proposals know the result
Initial proposals for streams can be brief and should be no longer than
800 words, should specify the content and process of the stream, and
contain full details of the convenors.
Stream convenors will be responsible for:
. drafting a call for papers for their stream;
. maximising publicity for their call using their own networks
in
addition to the general CMS mailing list;
. selecting the papers for inclusion within their stream;
. co-ordinating the stream during the conference itself.
As a rough guide, given our logistics, we estimate that each stream
could have around 4 or 5 x 1.5 hour sessions, on the assumption that we
will have about 12-15 streams.
The third CMS conference is jointly organised by a broad team from the
Behaviour in Organisations and Management Learning departments at
Lancaster University Management School.
Conference Organisers:
Alessia Contu, Carole Elliott, Steve Fox, Niall Hayes, Lucas Introna,
Mike Reed, Sharon Turnbull.
Main Advisor to the Organisers:
Hugh Willmott.
Further Advisors:
Irena Grugulis and John Hassard.
Conference Secretary:
Teresa Wisniewska.
