Management Education in Turkey: A Historical and Institutional Perspective
This symposium brings together three contributions that collectively assess
the past and possible futures of academic management education in Turkey.
Pioneering initiatives in tertiary commercial education date back to the end
of the nineteenth century based on models imported from France. The
century-long experience that followed has been characterized by reliance
upon foreign models and contents, although the exemplars and sources of
learning have changed over time. Two of the papers are primarily concerned
with the historical evolution of institutional forms and ideational frames.
Developments in the former are traced to the multiplicity of foreign models
imported over time as well as succeeding institutional pressures towards
homogenization. The ideational bases of academic education and
transformations in them are in turn located within the context of Turkey's
international politico-economic ties and political, social, and economic
changes at the local level, culminating in the apertura of the last two
decades. The third paper investigates possible future trajectories in view
of greater integration of the Turkish economy and business organizations
with the international world, thus becoming more susceptible to global
forces. Key words: Management education, management history, Turkey
