In response to Ken Freidman's discussion of the roles of
research and teaching by university professoriate, I would like to add
that my business school awards the rank of professor to those faculty
who demonstrate a sustained record of scholarship, teaching and service
leadership within the university and/or one's profession. By university
leadership I mean the undertaking of major university, school and
departmental responsibilities that impact the governance of the
institution. By professional leadership, I mean such activities as
editing journals and serving as executive officers in voluntary academic
associations related to one's academic discipline. As a private
university, voluntary service leadership is a vital component in the
profile of the professoriate and distinguishes them as the senior
leadership of the faculty. We generally award full professorships to
individuals who demonstrate distinguished leadership in the university
    and/or professional domains as well.
