I would agree life long learning is an enabler for life it
forms characters and gives food for the active brain for thinking and
decisions and also the most important thing communication with others and
life itself - without it what formations would arise.

Although I did not get an aha from Hemingway, I
    relate
to what you are saying. During my college years, I
learned that since I had to take those courses, I
might as well get something out of them. I learned
    to
appreciate poetry that I might never have read on my
own; I learned to respect the Greek and Roman
cultures; I especially liked learning philosophy,
because I could relate it to my life. I believe
    that
what I learned from a liberal arts education was how
to make meaning out of whatever experience I might
have, how to make each day count for something.

That, to me, is education for living.

Why can't we do both--educate for life and for jobs?
As a vocational educator, I often focused on this
    for
students who were so eager to get into the
    workforce.
They usually responded very well and indulged me in
    my
    "learning for living" approach.

An ingrained thought... Learning depends on the individual drive to
understand and find order in the stimulus. Effective faculty/consultants
just present the stimulus in such a way as to facilitate the individual
discovery process. Furthermore campuses/organization like life provide a
field where many individuals and communities interact both to stimulate and
be stimulated. Now does there exist a prescription that would satisfy every
one? I suppose the only truly enduring useful skill set resides in the
ability to wonder, home in, ask questions and then find ways to the
    answers.

Life is more than the 'return on the investment', 'performance
measurements', or 'serving others', it is about transforming dreams/visions
into realities, being jointly enriched through the interactions, all this
    in sustainable ways.

    Cordially,

    Esteban Trevino

    Estoban:
The emphasis should be on "transfer into realities." This last and most
difficult step is usually sidestepped for talk.
