Why is it we usually make stress management a personal responsibility?
According to Robert Hogan, the number one cause of stress in the work place
is poor management. I wrote a Chapter for a Center for Creative Leadership
book a few years ago that suggests that if we improved management, we would
lower employee stress. The complete citation for that chapter is:
Shipper, F. and Wilson, C.L. "The Impact of Managerial Behaviors on Group
Performance, Stress and Commitment," published in Impact of Leadership,
Kenneth E. Clark, Miriam B. Clark, and Donald P. Campbell, eds., Greensboro,
NC: The Center for Creative Leadership, 1992, pp. 119-129.
I have also had published an article that suggest a properly conceived 360
feedback program can achieve this result. The citation for that article is:
Shipper, F., and Neck, C.P. (1990). "Subordinates' Observations: Feedback
for Management Development." Human Resource Development Quarterly, Volume
1, Number 4, pp. 371-384.
If you cannot find the chapter or article and would like a copy of either or
both, e-mail me off-line at my address below, send me your mailing address,
and I will be happy to mail them to you.
