    Colleagues,

We would like to request inventories which can be used to measure
leadership skills of all who occupy managerial position in the context
of construction industry. We're especially interested in inventories
which are designed to measure project leadership skills.
    Thanks in advance

At the following web-site you can find a listing of instruments for
    assessing leadership/managerial/peer/team and other skills:
    http://www.boothco.com/Surveys.htm#exec_leadership

At the next site you can find research on skills assessment and improvement:
    http://faculty.ssu.edu/~fmshippe/home/biblist.htm

    I hope that this helps.

    Hi everyone,

    Two questions for the group:

    1) If core leadership behaviors like vision, decision-making, communication,
and results focus are considered to be soft skills, then how do you define
"softer" skills such as emotional intelligence, fairness, and developing
employees? I've heard the latter set referred to as "intangibles" of
leadership. How do you refer to concepts such as these?

    2) I'm looking for a stat on how satisfied the general population is with
their work/job. Can anyone direct me to a good survey? A survey conducted
by the popular media (such as CNN) or even the Gallup organization would be
    great!

    Thank you,

    Travis Bradberry

Travis, you seem to be freely intermixing
management skills and leadership behaviours, a
common occurance. A list of Internet links is
    at:
    http://www.academy.umd.edu/ILA/links.htm
The best place to start is the GLOBE study:

    developing

Most of these concepts have been defined by Clark Wilson in his
Leadership Task Cycle and operationalized in his Survey of Leadership
Practices. You can find a description of it in Leslie and Fleenor's
Feedback to Managers, 3rd edition. You can find a brief description of
it at http://www.boothco.com/Surveys.htm#lead_practices. I am sure that
the Booth Company at http://www.boothco.com would be happy to send you
    more information on it.

The one variable that is not directly measured by this survey is
emotional intelligence. However, the report generated from it does
provide multiple comparisons between self and others perceptions, a
    major component of emotional intelligence.

    I hope that this helps.

    Travis,

On your second question, the "Families and Work Institute" conducts a
comprehensive, well-respected study called "The National Study of the
    Changing Workforce" every five years.

It was last conducted in 1997 and is being run again this year. I know
satisfaction is among the data they track. The executive summary is
    available at: http://www.familiesandwork.org/nationalstudy.html
