WELCOME TO TAMPERE, FINLAND - WHERE NATURE & TECHNOLOGY MEET
    http://www.aace.org/conf/edmedia/aboutvenue.htm

It was only 221 years ago that the Swedish king Gustav III signed the
papers to make Tampere, a small village between two large lakes and with
wild rapids flowing through its centre, into an official town. It didnt
take long before the city started on its now so familiar path of paving the
way for Finnish industry. Many an invention has been the Finnish first in
Tampere: the first paper machine (1843), the first electric light (1882),
the first electric oven (1916) and the first radio broadcast (1923). The
people in Tampere have been the first in the world to use NMT telephones
    (1974), biodegradable implants (1984), GSM telephones (1991), a walking
tree harvester (1995), Nokia Communicators (1996) and GSM card phones
(1997). With two universities, two polytechnics and several other
educational establishments, this trend is bound to continue.

In addition to being hard workers, the people of Tampere have been
culturally very active, and can today pride themselves with 16 professional
theatre groups, International cultural festivals such as Tampere Biennale
music festival, Tampere Short Film Festival, Tampere Choir Festival and
Tampere International Theatre Festival, a multitude of museums and Tampere
Hall - the largest concert and congress Centre in Scandinavia.

Although Tampere, with its 200,000 inhabitants, is the third largest city
in Finland, it Is still a very tranquil place to visit. The two large lakes
surrounding the city offer ample possibilities for cruises and fishing, the
countless parks give the city a relaxed feel even in the city centre, and
after only a ten minute drive, you can find yourself surrounded by nothing
    but forest.

    TAMPERE - AN EDUCATIONAL CENTRE
Finland has one of the most comprehensive university networks in Europe,
and Tampere has several institutions of higher education. The University of
Tampere is the largest of these, with some 14,000 students. In addition to
the traditional departments located in five faculties, there are the
Centres of Competence engaging in interdisciplinary research and education,
as exemplified in Information Technology and Medical Technology. Quality
Development in teaching is University policy, quality assurance is a
priority. Problem-based learning is an innovation for medical students.

Hypermedia Laboratory at the University of Tampere: The Hypermedia
Laboratory at the University of Tampere offers education on hypermedia and
interactive and digital media that are closely related to it. The education
is aimed at designers, developers, producers and users in the field. In
addition to education the Hypermedia Laboratory conducts research and
development of hypermedia in different aspects of science.
