As most of you know, in addition to my job with Mg-Ed-Dv--whatever
that might be construed to be!--I am Program Chair of the Academy
of Management's Management Education and Development Division
for our annual meeting which will be held on August 9-12, 1998 in
San Diego, California. (As I solicit paper submitters and other
participants I muse that maybe this is related somehow to
primeval hunting and gathering in stone-age forests?). Leaving
microontological grasps for meaning, indeed, I am hunting
for members for our Program Review Committee. Yes--that is:
REVIEWERS! Sure--YOU! I'm not kidding YOU! Uh, what's
in for you? Hmmm. Well the satisfaction of contributing to the
discipline, being able to look in the mirror and say "Hey there you
collegial devil you!", getting several letters to flash the dean and
personnel committees (oh yeah, I write really great letters. First,
getting appointed to the Academy of Management's Management
Education and Development Program Review Committee in itself
will impress 'em all. Second, getting a letter from a member of
the "executive committee" of the AOM MED Division complimenting
on the cognitive cogency and analytical acumen of your reviews
will get their attention. Third, just noting these things in your resume
will make it heavier (let alone putting them as supporting documents
in folders in your crate!)). AND, if you write really knock-your-socks-
off reviews, the grand prize--getting on the program as a paper
discussant or chair (oh yeah, you get several cool letters from
me for each of those--again, I write very nice letters!). If your paper
submission gets chewed up by a teamsters' union bomb at UPS or
something (if your dog eats it, whatever!) you have a back-up to go to
San Diego with dignity--ON THE PROGRAM. Also, your comments
will provide constructive direction for the revision of the paper
by one of your peers--that'll help get you to heaven!. Finally, reviewing
is a great way to get involved the Academy and the MED division.
That is, the first step to bigger and sometimes better things.
Come on, help me out! You'll see articles that will be published
in the year 2001 in January! You can gaze at marvelous footnotes to
sources in your library that you missed.
How do you get into this fabulous postion? Good question! Send
me an email with the Subject: "A New Member of the Program Review
Committee". In the message field explain what sorts of things you
are competent to review--ideally things related to management
education or management development! However, since I'll get papers
related to entrepreneurship education, international, training executives
in Wuzland, etc., it is best to give me an idea of all of your areas
of expertise. Provide your full name, highest degree, present
institutional affiliation(s), and your best mailing address in January (so we get
the papers to you in a most timely fashion!), and telephone numbers (office,
home, fax). Contact me today! Oh yeah, I am particularly interested in
you Mg-Ed-Dvers in foreign countries. Oh yeah, Mg-Ed-Dvers should
get their pals in the next office to sign on too!
Oh yeah, we give out 6 awards to our best reviewers too (at our
divisional business meeting at the conference in San Diego). Such
a plaque is sure to distract visitors on days when you have shoes of
different colors and styles on!
Cybercollegially,
Charlie Wankel,
AOM MED Program Chair
