  • 1.  mission statements -- everyone has an opinion

    Posted 01-21-2000 18:45
I remember in a graduate MBA course, two of my professors got into a
heated argument about what went into a mission statement. Some of the
students ended up getting into the argument, as well. My learning was
that there are many perspectives on the concept of a mission statement.

After about 25 years of working in various capacities with strategic
planning, I find that organizations seem to spend far more effort
articulating the mission statement than they do in actually following it
-- which is one of the major problems with strategic planning, in
    general.

If you're interested, there's a variety of views in the Free Management
Library about designing mission statements. Go to

Is it possible that in different organizations and management styles that a
"mission statement" serves different purposes and, as a result, requires
    different formats?

Anyone know of any research on that?
