    Dear Colleagues,

    I hope all is well.

I am preparing to teach Principles of Management course to a first year undergraduate cohort. I was wondering whether you have any suggestions for classroom activities/practical sessions.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for your time and help.

    Kind regards,
    Ana Radulovic

    Hi, Ana!
We have been using a computer simulation program, BizCafe (www.interpretive.com), for many years in our introductory course. This software package requires students to run their own cafe over a number of quarters (they could do in teams but we have them work alone). They make decisions as entrepreneurs and learn about planning, organizing, etc. Decisions involve buying coffee, pricing, hiring/firing people, deciding on pay, etc. It is a useful exercise in management and complements the material they are covering in the text.

BizCafe is a fully online software package so instructors do not need to input anything other than getting things set up and selecting quarterly scenarios/incidents that the business owner has to decide on (campaign contribution, community service, etc.). We have found that students appreciate the complexity of operating a small enterprise since the number of decisions each quarter total from about 10-15. This exercise is also an interesting one for professors as the results and decision making varies by student (and class). The engagement level of students tends to be high and feedback tends to be very positive.

    Good luck coordinating your course.

Ana – what kinds of topics? How many students? If you are teaching anything around Hawthorne experiments... Last time I taught it, I used student volunteers, created a mini production line and then 'replicated' some of the experiments with the students to visually demonstrate what those experiments were about.

    Best wishes,
