I'm VERY interested in putting together a proposal for a round-table or a
symposium for the 1997 Academy meetings in Boston on the following
topic: "The Impact of Recent De-Affirmative Action Events on the
Future of Management Education & Development for Women & People of
Color" As many of you probably know, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals
decided this year that the University of Texas Law School may NOT use
gender or minority status in their admission decision. Moreover, just
this month in the general election, California voters overwhelming
supported a ballot measure to end all affirmative action in the state of
California. My question is what is the likely impact of these two recent
events? What have we learned to date (by the meetings)?

I was in the process of putting together such a panel/symposium (of
non-MED people ... sorry ... I should know better) but it has fallen
through. The good news is that now maybe there are some of you that
would like to pursue this topic/proposal with me!! Any takers?

Please email me (via this listserve or directly at
kpowers@willamette.edu), fax me, or give me a call!! Thanks!

Kathy, I'm quite interested; especially in a round-table. I've just finished
having my students debate the issue (more broadly, of course, than within
management and education community) in My Business Ethics course. One minor
observation on your note: The California proposition applied only to the
state and local governments. Primary impact, as of now, is within those
institutions and people doing business with them (e.g., set-asides, required
AA plans in organizations contracting with the entities, etc.). The
California Regents had already done away with the concept of AA on school
admissions, with some phasing to occur. I think it's a long way from being
    settled, however.
FYI, I'll be on leave December 3 through 16. My wife and I are going to (a
little belatedly) celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary by sailing from
Acapulco to Ft. Lauderdale, via the Panama Canal aboard Cunard's SS Dynasty,
calling at Costa Rica, Jamaica, Key West and a couple of other sundry locales.

Kathy, I don't have a reaction either way, but you might want to check the
editorial page of the Wall Street Journal for an interesting piece about
academic reactions to the California proposition, etc.in yesterday's
    edition. Tom Kolenko.
