CALL FOR PAPERS, PROPOSALS, AND REVIEWERS:

WORKPLACE SOCIALIZATION:
PERSPECTIVES ON ORGANIZATIONAL ENTRY,
TRAINING, AND EXIT

The Fifth A. F. Jacobson Symposium in Communications

Creighton University
Omaha, Nebraska
May 28-June 1, 1997

We seek papers, proposals, and reviewers for an interdisciplinary
symposium exploring organizational socialization. The symposium
hopes to attract practitioners, theorists, and researchers from
Communication Studies, Management, Psychology, Education, and Sociology
who would like to address a variety of topics related to the
symposium theme in plenary sessions permitting informed
discussion. Proposals can address any aspect of the symposium
topic. They may be applied, theoretical, or empirical in nature.
In particular, we seek proposals that might explore the following
topics, among others:

Developmental stages in socialization;
Interpersonal and group processes during stages of
organizational socialization;
Communication characteristics during socialization,
adaptation, and exit;
Training and development interventions designed to foster
effective socialization;
The impact of selection, training, and performance
appraisal on socialization;
'Culture' and 'climate' in socialization;
Group or gender differences in socialization;
Research issues and methodological innovations in
socialization assessment;
Implications of fair employment practice legislation on
socialization.

In addition, we seek papers that could be part of two special
symposium sessions. The first of these sessions will focus on
workplace integrity, organizational deviance, and organizational
citizenship behaviors. The second will focus on the impact of
testing and assessment on socialization interventions.

All submissions will be peer reviewed for presentation. Final
submissions, due at the symposium, will receive a second round of
reviews for possible inclusion in a proposed edited volume of
symposium proceedings. A limited amount of support is available
to help offset lodging costs for full-time matriculating graduate
students. The Symposium will be held on the campus of Creighton
University in Omaha, Nebraska. Participants will have access to
meals and accommodations at nominal cost. The University is close
to Omaha's restored Old Market District, which features
restaurants, galleries, and shops.

To be considered, submit two copies of papers or detailed
proposals (one copy must carry no personal identifiers) to John
Hollwitz, A. F. Jacobson Professor of Communications, Creighton
University, Omaha, Nebraska 68178. For further information, call
402/280-2532, or email to jcholl@creighton.edu. Deadlines for

The Seventh Annual University of North Texas Symposium:
Individual, Team, and Organizational Effectiveness

May 26-28, 1999 Denton, Texas

The Center for the Study of Work Teams will hold its seventh annual
conference on the campus of the University of North Texas. Papers are
invited that focus on all aspects of organizational psychology and
organizational science. Three tracks are described below that invite
papers on individuals at work, collaborative processes and structures,
and the design and development of organizations. Both empirical
studies and conceptual/theoretical papers are invited (excellent
literature reviews may fit the latter category).

Conceptual/theoretical papers will be shared in presentations;
empirical studies will be shared in poster sessions. The presentation
forums may include paper presentations, panels, round tables, and
debates.

Track I: The Individual at Work

Papers submitted for this track will focus on the effectiveness of the
individual, including: performance management issues, work stress,
concentration, learning, motivation, leadership/stewardship, conflict,
socialization, control, job design, cognition, decision making,
diversity, measurement, reward, responsibility / accountability/ownership, appraisal & feedback,
emotion, values, creativity/innovation, participation/involvement, the
meaning of work, etc. (Conceptual papers for presentations and
empirical submissions for posters)

Track II: Collaborative Processes and Structures

Papers submitted for this track will focus on work group and work team
effectiveness including: team design and development, group process,
social networks, communities of practice, learning communities,
emergence and self-organizing systems, collaborative structures,
lateral integration, strategic alliances, informal networks, formal
networks, webs of participation, etc. (Empirical papers for posters)

Advanced Teams. Each year a special theme is chosen for a
portion of the collaboration track. The 1999 theme is advanced teams.
By advanced teams, we are referring to teams that have reached a fairly
high level of maturity. In developmental stages, the team has
reached an advanced or high performing stage. There are a number of
theoretical and practice issues when that occurs, including: the
debate between stage and process theories of development,
contingencies for high performance at that stage, growth beyond that
stage (e.g., self-governing, self-organizing), the interface problems
for an advanced team in a less advanced business environment (e.g.,
conflict with hierarchical approaches, managers' with limited
knowledge and skill, fear of high levels of empowerment, etc.),
training and development needs for advanced teams, self-management
challenges, selection/turnover problems, etc. Papers selected for
this track will be considered for publication in Volume 7 of our
annual series with JAI Press: Interdisciplinary Advanced in the Study
of Work Teams. (Conceptual papers for presentations)

Track III: Design and Development of Organizations

Papers submitted for this track will focus on organizational
effectiveness, including: OD, redesign, STS, incremental change, the
radical change that represents organizational transformation,
horizontal and vertical integration, alignment of systems, boundary
issues, cross-functional structure, new organizational forms (e.g.,
networks, cellular organization, federations, alliances, etc.),
evolution and adaptation of organizations, complex adaptive systems,
the learning organization, organizational culture, strategic HR,
entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship, cross-cultural organization,
transfer of social technologies, sustainability, changes in research
paradigms, etc. (Conceptual papers for presentations and empirical
submissions for posters)

Selection Process

1. An abstract of the proposed paper must be received by August 15,
1998.

2. Abstracts will be reviewed and a formal invitation for complete
paper submissions will be made by September 15.

3. Invited papers will be due November 1. Authors selected from a
final review will be invited to present at the conference.

4. Invitations for presentation will be extended by December 15, 1998.

6th Annual EDINEB International Conference

Teaching Today the Knowledge of Tomorrow

June 23 - 26, 1999

The Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration
Bergen, Norway

In the world of today, change is said to be the only constant. Knowledge
travels fast, through a variety of distribution channels, many of which were
unknown only a few years ago. Therefore, knowledge can be a highly perishable
commodity. An important objective of the dissemination of knowledge will
always be to ensure that it arrives fresh after the shortest possible route.
Academic research within the areas of business administration and economics
has often been criticized by the business community, which claims that much
of it is mainly directed at the establishment of researchers themselves, who
reply to and discuss it within the establishment instead of distributing it
to the business community. Students may often wonder whether they are
studying yesterday's knowledge, instead of being continuously updated on
current and relevant research. The proliferation of learning opportunities
(for example Technology Information) today, makes learning for tomorrow even
more complicated. In our global society, success or failure in business
frequently depends on which party has the most current knowledge of the
issues and facts involved.
As universities and corporations attempt to prepare management to be alert to
future changes, improved, and even brand new teaching methodologies are
required. The main focus of the sixth EDINEB conference will be on the
distribution and selection of new knowledge. How can business educators
deliver new knowledge to students and the business community more rapidly
than before? How should we define the core business curriculum when new
knowledge becomes old knowledge?

Suggested topics for paper presentations, as well as interactive workshops,
demonstrations, poster sessions, and round-table discussions, are the
following themes:

- partnerships between business and academic research
- project-based, action-based and problem-based learning
- distance education
- technology supported learning
- on-the-job training programs in business and economics
- entrepreneurship programs in business-school curricula
- selection of business curriculum contents
- postgraduate education

Abstracts

Abstracts (500 word maximum) should contain author(s) name(s),
title/position, institution, address, telephone, fax number, and email
address. Abstracts will be published in the official program. No author's
name may appear in more than two abstract submissions. Abstract submissions
should be received on or before November 20, 1998.
Authors will be notified of status regarding abstracts mid January 1999. Send
abstracts (preferably by email) to:

Email: EDINEB@FACBURFDEW.UNIMAAS.NL

Fax: ++31 43 3213137

Papers

A selection of conference papers will be considered for publication in the
EDINEB series: "Educational Innovation in Economics and Business", Volume 6,
published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.

I would be pleased if you could respond to the following call for papers.

------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS

EJC/REC 10(1) First Quarter 2000

Communication as a Constitutive Process in Organizations

Vol. 10(1) of Electronic Journal of Communication/La Revue Electronique
de Communication (EJC/REC) will be devoted broadly to the topic of
organizational communication. Its theme will be "Communication as a
Constitutive Process in Organizing and Organizations." The editor would be
pleased to receive papers that respond to this theme. Without limiting
scholars' interpretation of the theme, responses could consider matters such
as:

1. the manner in which communication constitutes systems such as
strategic planning or structures such as hierarchy;

2. the manner in which system and structure affect message construction
and communication; and/or

3. outstanding scholarly analyses and contributions to current
understanding of the theme.

Papers can present theoretical analyses of issues relevant to the theme,

Posted 10-29-1999 03:09
Dear members of the MG-ED-DV discussion list, the
EDINEB network is proud to announce our 2000
conference on innovations in management
education, Newport Beach, CA, June 2000.
------------------------------------

Call for Papers

Educating Knowledge Workers for Corporate
Leadership

7th Annual EDINEB International Conference

June 21 - 23, 2000

At Newport Beach Marriott Hotel, Newport Beach,
California, USA
---------------------------

Creative, intellectual capital is generally
considered to be one of the greatest assets of an
organization or business firm. Companies not only
compete on quality, service and timeliness, but
also on knowledge. It is increasingly recognized
that organizations have to be effective at
creating or acquiring new knowledge and
successfully applying that knowledge to their own
activities. These demands place a high premium on
the way work is organized and knowledge workers
are selected and prepared for corporate
leadership.

The business world is asking management schools
to deliver innovative learning systems adapted to
their specific training needs. But business
schools are facing a strain of competitive
educational initiatives offered by corporate
universities and business training centers.
Should they resist, react, or redefine the
academic role for business society?

The 2000 International Conference of EDINEB
offers an exceptional opportunity to collaborate
and network with people from the academic world,
corporate training centers, and consulting firms.
The central focus on the conference theme is
highlighted from different perspectives of
professional training centers, business
organizations, and business schools. EDINEB
designs a variety of session formats to provide
different platforms for learning by participants.

We welcome abstract submissions on any topic
related to the themes below.
* Connecting business education with the needs of
the corporate world
* Innovative learning systems for knowledge
workers in business organizations
* Identification of knowledge and skills needed
by academic graduates, knowledge workers, and
(top)executives
* Selection and coaching of business graduates at
job-entry
* Models of innovative corporate training
* Critical appraisal of the interdependency
between academic institutions, academic theory,
business practice, and business organizations
* New perspectives about producing knowledge and
its role in business organizations
* (Re)design of knowledge management, learning
systems, and training for corporate leadership
* Measurement tools for learning, transfer of
knowledge, and organizational change

different perspectives. Symposium proposals
should include the names of contributors and
brief abstracts (maximum 500 words) for each of
the contributors.

Paper Presentations

Paper presentations are scheduled for 40 minutes
(including 10 minutes for discussion).

Business Volume 7, published by Kluwer Academic
Publishers. Subsequent information regarding
conference guidelines and publications will be
forthcoming. Information about the EDINEB
publication series can be found at
http://www.wkap.nl/

The EDINEB Network

At the December 1993 EDINEB Conference
(Maastricht, the Netherlands) the EDINEB Network
was founded to serve as a continual basis for
exchanging experiences and knowledge about
educational innovation in economics and business.
Among the activities of this Network are
workshops, providing expertise about innovations,
publications (Series on Educational Innovation in
Economics and Business, published by Kluwer
Academic Publishers), international conferences,
and other forms of exchange. Network members have
served both education and industry in the
development of innovative practices across Europe
and the United States. Information about EDINEB

Jeff,
I am writing a paper this very day which fits exactly the title of your
conference. However, without a client in Australia, or at least New
Zealand, I could not get there to deliver it.

How do you (plural) deal with this type of dilema?

Call for Papers - EDUCATION STREAM

The Second International Conference on Critical Management Studies
to be held at Hulme Hall, UMIST/University of Manchester, England

July 11 - 13 2001

Education Stream

The raison d'etre of contemporary educational institutions is increasingly
complicated by global economic imperatives. Indeed, the language of
education is often one of production and consumption, including
considerations of accountability, stakeholders, and "customer" satisfaction.

The rationale for this stream draws upon this complex and often strained
interface between institutions of higher learning and the business world.
As the influence of the economic realm increasingly infiltrates all aspects
of social life, traditionally non-economic institutions such as universities
are forced to ongoingly renegotiate their social identity. Further, these
new educational arrangements imply alternative definitions of knowledge,
pedagogy, 'teaching' practices, etc. This stream draws upon critical
management perspectives to highlight and examine the various aspects of this
process.

The intent of this stream is to explore the interface between academe and
business from a variety of critical perspectives, including feminist,
post-structuralist, neo-institutionalist, post-colonial theory, etc.. We
are particularly interested in work which examines new educational
arrangements, and especially encourage interdisciplinary or
multidisciplinary papers from sociology, anthropology, history, education,
philosophy, organization studies, and others.

Possible areas for critical inquiry may include:

Existing arrangements between academic institutions and businesses

Discourse and practices associated with the formal activity of managing
educational institutions

The ways in which educational institutions respond to economic pressures

The management of academics

The nature of the educational institution/business world interface in
particular geographic or social contexts

Alternative forms of knowledge and knowledge practices as they relate to
the academe-business interface.

Our 'identities' as faculty, students, consumers, producers

An abstract of 1000 words (250 words for poster papers) should be submitted
to one of the stream conveners via email, fax or mail by 31 October 2000.
Acceptance decisions will be communicated by December 1st 2000. Full papers
will be due by April 1st 2001.

Leadership and vision are among today's requisite skills for defining the
future of business organizations. Knowledge, skills, and an ability to
sustain values are critical concerns for learning organizations. Developing
a competence for international collaboration and global competitiveness has
become a mainstay for both small and large companies. As organizations deal
with the winds of global change, learning programs for leadership in the new
economy need to reinforce key values and prepare learners for dynamic
change. Incorporating appropriate technology, content, and learning methods
has become more critical than ever before.

Impact of Culture and Education on Learning Practices
at the
Renaissance Hotel
Salzburg, Austria
June 18-20, 2003

Conference Theme
What we learn and how we learn are critical elements to our development as
we navigate our career and life pathways. The things we learn shape our
lives as do the ways in which we learn. Our cultural and educational
environments also impact our lives and our learning. It is in concert with
our learning experiences that we play out our own development and help to
shape the cultural and educational environments for others to follow.
Professional educators and leaders of educational programs need to
appreciate and understand the impact of culture and education on teaching
practices and on learning platforms. As the world in which we live takes on
increasing elements of transformation, it is vital to help prepare students
for ways to adapt and learn from such dynamic changes.

Conference Themes.
* Innovative education practices
* Integration of culture and education
* Collaborative learning methods
* Designing learning content
* New architectures for learning platforms
* Making economics relevant in business education

Call for Papers & Conference Announcement

13th Annual EDiNEB International Conference

http://www.EDINEB.net/

Leading Innovation in Global Education & Training

June 14-16, 2006

Marriott Hotel Lisbon, Portugal

The 2006 Lisbon Conference brings together Business Educators, Academics, and Professionals in the fields of Education, HR, Training and Development to exchange ideas and knowledge about innovative learning practices in business education and training for global business change. The EDiNEB conference is organized around two Tracks that address issues of education and training from different perspectives.

1. Leveraging Performance in Training and Development

The continuous development of new products, services or processes all over the world demand change for almost any organization whether operating on a global or local scale. However, current business practice also shows that many change processes stall prematurely or fail to achieve their desired result. Training and development play a key role in leveraging the learning capacity of an organization. Training that adds value to individual employees, and to global business enterprises.

2. Readiness for Global Business Education

Business education has been repeatedly criticized for the delivery of graduates that do not surpass the level of being competent. Business enterprises demand graduates that become true experts. But can business schools indeed create learning experiences that address the needs of the global marketplace? Do they prepare students for changing business practices? Can they demonstrate the value of their teaching? Can business schools teach students to build learning organizations within the global market place as business is calling for?

Take-aways from our conference

The 13th Annual EDiNEB conference provides multiple platforms for knowledge exchange. The conference schedule contains different tracks for participants interested in best practices, or participants searching for evidence-based reform in Training and Global Business Education. We invite researchers to submit their work, but also presenters for workshops and discussion rounds. Our past conferences are known for the spirit and passion that participants share. We will provide space and opportunity for informal gathering and meetings with participants.

Papers, workshop deliverables and discussion outcomes will be posted at our EDiNEB website. Selected papers will be published in a special journal issue.

Guidelines for abstract submissions

Please submit your abstracts/proposals via our website www.edineb.net. Our homepage contains detailed instructions about abstract formats. Deadline for abstract submission is January 31, 2006.

The Symposium Theme

The 2008 ISPSO Symposium Annual Meeting, to be held in Philadelphia, will explore meaning, motivation and the links between them from a psychoanalytic point of view. In a groundbreaking paper, "Beyond the Surrogate of Motivation," Burkard Sievers argued that we become preoccupied with motivation when people cannot find meaning in their work. The question is how do people achieve meaning? Is it something they are given, something they wrestle out of their situation, something that is imposed, or something that flows naturally from the work itself?

In exploring this theme we don't want to reject out of hand the role that money may play in generating meaning. While money is an instrument for acquiring something else, it is also a symbol in its own right and so by definition possesses meaning. It can for example stand for the honor people accord those who are successful, the measure of one's capacity to emerge as a victor in a competition, the means for exercising agency in the world, the source and the basis for reparative gift giving. The apparently sensible distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation breaks down when the meaning of money is generated in the traffic between our culture and our internal fantasies.

At the same time intrinsic meaning is not without its burdens. When people get pleasure from the work itself, when it puts them in what Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi calls a state of 'flow" they may neglect the wider purpose, for good or for evil, which sanctions the work. This is when people may without forethought drift into unethical work because the process, the craft, rather than product, becomes paramount.

We also want to explore how group life shapes a context within which people extract meaning from work. When people share an identification with a charismatic leader, or participate in a group that is ready to "fight the world," they enter a drama, a story that is rich in meaning. Moreover, in both these cases the meaning of work is potentiated by the social connections, real or fantasized that work provides. The story is social.

But while the story is social, people's capacity to benefit from it may differ. Perhaps only the organization's elite participates in the story of the organization's success. They come to represent not just success, but as Howard Schwartz has suggested, perfection. This myth of perfection protects them from the stresses and psychological injuries that others, not in the elite, experience.

We are also interested in exploring how in consulting to organizations, we face the dilemmas of meaning and motivation. In helping organizations improve their effectiveness, when and how do we come up against issues of meaning? How do we evaluate various organization development tools, such as vision and mission statements as methods for helping people create meaning? When and how does the use of data, for example a financial statement, help people create meaning, and when does it become a tool in the contest over meaning? When in consulting to organizations do we find that we are calling into question a group myth and therefore undermining how people make meaning? What makes an interpretation, whether expressed in a diagnostic report, a working note or a verbal statement, meaningful? Is a measure of its meaningfulness its ability to connect people with one another, or release energy for work?

Papers that address any of these issues and their implications, or others on related issues will be most welcomed for consideration by the symposium planning committee.

John McIntyre, CIBER, Georgia Institute of Technology

Submission Deadline: May 1, 2009

The twenty first century has been dubbed the "Chinese Century". As China becomes a dominant world economic actor, its enterprises increasingly look to distant shores in the Western Hemisphere, the European continent as well as the Crescent of Crisis. Its state-owned enterprises and nascent corporate forms are emerging onto the world stage. The academic literature has begun to explore this new internationalization phenomenon. Its size, corporate manifestations, impacts on Chinese growth, and the world economy and prospects are still not well understood.

A number of important issues need to be addressed in the process of the globalization of the Chinese firms. For example, what are the objectives of the Chinese firms that go abroad? How do they formulate and implement their strategy? How should their performance be evaluated? Going abroad imposes an array of challenges to the Chinese firms, which have not been well exposed to operating in foreign environments. Their learning experience needs to be documented and studied. From the perspective of organizational theory, we need to understand how the outbound Chinese firms design their organization, balance the headquarter-subsidiary relationship, and cope with foreign culture. Furthermore, we need to examine the interaction between the Chinese MNCs and the institutions ("game-rules") of the global marketplace. For example, what impact will the Chinese firms have on the institutions of the global marketplace? How do the global institutions affect the Chinese MNCs?

The topics envisioned for the special issue will be broad as long as they can be tied to the major themes of the globalization of Chinese firms. Appropriate topics for inclusion in the special issue could include but are not limited to:

*Objectives, strategies, and performance of Chinese firms in globalization

*Organizational design, structure, and outcome in globalization

*Dissemination of knowledge on the emergence of globalizing Chinese firms

*The impact of Chinese business and firms on global business and environments

*The role of culture and culture change in Chinese firms in globalization

*Headquarter-subsidiary relationships in Chinese firms

*Chinese business groups/conglomerates in globalization

*Chinese family-owned firms in globalization

*Forms of engagement with foreign firms used by internationalizing Chinese firms (e.g. partnerships, acquisitions, OEM, ODM, OBM, etc.)

To date, much of the China research has been forming a foundation for understanding strategy and performance, particularly of foreign firms in China. However, there has not been very much work that examines the globalization of Chinese firms. The articles in the special issue will also make theoretical contributions in internationalization, entry mode, organizational design, cultural change, and institutional environment.

We believe that the proposed work will enhance our understanding of the globalization of Chinese firms, both empirically and theoretically and should be widely cited as scholars and practitioners seek to explain how and why Chinese firms go abroad, how they perform, and how they interact with the global environment of business.

When submitting to the special issue, please follow standard MOR submission guidelines, which can be viewed at both http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/mor and http://www.iacmr.org and are published in the first issue of every volume of MOR.

Please submit your paper to the lead guest editor Ilan Alon (ialon@rollins.edu) and copy it to iacmr.mor@asu.edu. Identify your paper as a submission to the special issue on The Globalization of Chinese Enterprises. Papers will be double-blind peer reviewed. and acceptance decisions will be based on the standards described in the MOR mission statement.
