As we start a new semester in the academic world, our e-mailboxes get
filled very quickly. May I please encourage people to respond privately
to messages like the one above and not send messages to the entire
membership. I thank you for your consideration.

Well, I have covered myself with glory! Posted a private message to the whole
    list. Sorry, folks.

I'd like to hope that this may be a "good mistake," however, in that it leads
me to suggest that participants in this list might be the ideal people to
develop a training module to replace the standard welcome message, which
doesn't seem to be effective. Even here at Dartmouth, where there is
    exceptional computer support,
mistake-proofing isn't explicitly addressed, and we don't train email users in
the commonalities of listservers, so that they can puzzle out digest,
unsubscribe, etc., options for themselves. I would be pleased to work with
others (off line) in developing something for common use: I plan to go over
this area with my students, as part of increasing their use of the net for
    classes.

When you are replying to a single person with information that is not
relevant or valuable to all of the members of the list, it is considered
net courtesy to reply to the individual rather than the list.

    Scott,

Thanks for the reminder. I think perhaps what happened to a lot of us
(or at least what happened to me) was that the initial e-mail test
message that came through showed up in my caption list as coming from an
individual and I made the mistake of using the "reply" function in order
to respond, not realizing that this would broadcast it to everyone.
Oops! Sorry for the extra e-mail clutter, folks!
