The comment by RICHARD CORCORAN suggesting, as have others, that
leadership & management are different seems to ignore the history of
management thought wherein leadership is one of the functions of
management. I would also note that most management textbooks include
being innovative is part of the managers role, not just maintaining the
status quo.
I think what confuses the issue is that many of our models for leaders
come from politics, the military, and sports where we typically expect
an inspirational & motivational form of leadership expressed via great
speeches to the entire group. In a typical organization the
manager/leader rarely deals with all of the people in the group in this
fashion. Managership/leadeship is usually done one to one or one to
small group. The leadership function is performed but in a different
and less obvious way. Of course the scope of the manager/leader is
constrained by the organizational position.
