  • 1.  Question to the list

I have noticed a real drop in traffic on this list. So here's a question
I've been milling around in the grey cells.
What is the perceived future of management training using the
internet/intranets as a resource. Who are todays cutting edge providers in
this area and what do they do now? What will they and there competitors be
doing in the next year or two? Personally I'm much more interested in
training that has little to do with learning to use computors and lots to
    do with learning something else.
I look forward to seeing any contributions
    regards dave

There actually was some discussion on this last week
-- a rather excited contributor extolled the virtues (and
profitability) of teaching through distance learning. A colleague
of mine who recently returned from sabbatical claimed he would like
to eliminate the use of a textbook in his finance classes and teach
off the internet. I also am interested in using technology as a
medium for teaching. What other discussions are there on this
topic? Are educators grossly behind the curve of technology
infusion? Are institutions of higher learning slow to change?

There is an ongoing asynchronous discussion taking place at

    The Center@Hamline

    http://elsie.hamline.edu:8000/caucus/

WebCaucus is conferencing software which is being used as a medium
to actualize teaching on the net. Hamline is certainly ahead of the curve
    on this one...

  • 4.  Question to the list

    Posted 02-12-1997 09:47
    Hi!--
I signed onto the list three weeks ago, on recommendation of one of my
professors. Whether or not the volume of correspondence is less than it
once was, I do not know. However, I have been disappointed in the
focus and quality of the messages and, given that, there seem to me to
have been a huge number of them.

I, too, am committed to developing on-line course adaptations, the
"virtual university" as well as face-to-face teaching methods, but this
list has, so far, not seemed to be a forum that is at all effective in
that. There have been several messages that I saved because the author
referred to innovative techniques he or she was using--thinking that I
would contact them later. Maybe that is the wrong approach--we need to
get back to them now and say, "So, tell us about it!"

If the listserv were less crowded with self-serving generally-worthless
garbage, I would be much more likely to do that. (If that offends
anyone, it does not really matter because if the quantity of useless
communications does not decrease, I am going to sign off anyway!)

What does the group want the forum to be? And, are we willing to set some
norms for communications that permit it to serve its purpose.

I am new to this list and here is my contribution to it. I am currently developing a software for decision making on situational leadership, along with people from the computer science department. This is intended to be on a CD as well as on the net. Right now we are, at the same time, trying to define student characteristics that might affect his or her performance on the use of this kind of classroom aids, such as locus of control, among others, so that we can do some adaptations to our software. I wonder if someone in this list has already done something similar and what they have found.

For those of you who are interested in using technology as a medium for
education, MED (together with Careers) has put together a session on this topic
for the preconference of the Academy of Mangement in Boston. The session,
*Managing the Technology Classroom: Preparing Ourselves and our Students,* will
be on Saturday from 10:15-12:15 and is designed to be participative and hands-on.
