NACRA Call for Cases & Papers

  • 1.  NACRA Call for Cases & Papers

    Posted 06-08-1997 17:15
Some of you may have cases ready for submission, or nearly so. Or perhaps
a paper or idea for a special presentation. Our deadline was Friday - but
if you're essentially ready, call/FAX/e-mail the affected track chair, or
me, and we should be able to accomodate you.

One caution, my e-mail goes dead tonight (Sunday) for 1-4 days; and some
track chairs do not check their e-mail very often.

The case call is attached below: Tim Edlund

NORTH AMERICAN CASE RESEARCH ASSOCIATION (NACRA)
    1997 CALL FOR CASES/PAPERS/SYMPOSIA

The 1997 NACRA meeting will be held at the Airport Holiday Inn in
Cincinnati, Ohio from Thursday, October 23 through Saturday, October
    25 (1997).

Cases (and related papers and proposals) are invited from all fields
that use cases as part of their research and/or teaching
    methodologies. Decision-oriented, field-researched cases are
    especially welcome.

    Instructions:

    1. Submission deadline: Friday, June 6, 1997.

    2. Cases should be typed, double or single spaced. Ordinarily,
cases should be no longer than 30 pages. Competitive papers
should be double spaced only, and are limited to 18 pages.
Proposals for papers, symposia, and panels should be limited to
two pages. Cover pages do not count in these page limits.

Cases may be submitted to only one track. If judged more
suitable for another track, Track Chairs will so arrange, to
    maximize your chance of acceptance.

Authors may submit more than one case. However, each case or
case set (sequential cases treating the same organization) must
have a separate co-author** registered, present, and
participating throughout the case workshop schedule. Each
participant is scheduled as a discussant for all cases presented
in the group that includes their own case.
** This limitation does not apply to a video case, nor to
ideas or concepts submitted to the special track for case
    idea development.

    3. Papers, symposia, and panels should address case research,
writing, teaching, publication, and related issues. Proposals
about how to conduct research and writing, field researching
cases, and video presentations concerning the use of various
case teaching techniques are encouraged. We are particularly
interested in papers that address the theme of "Strategies for
Promoting the Case Method in Colleges and Universities."

Case authors may also present papers and participate in symposia
    and panels.

    4. Submit 4 copies of each case and the accompanying instructor's
manual (teaching note) and a one page summary for publication in
the Proceedings plus an authorization form to the appropriate
track chair. 4 copies of papers, proposals, and cases (with
teaching notes) not falling into any of the designated tracks
should be sent to the Vice-President Programs.

    5. A cover page should include name, affiliation, address, phone,
FAX, and e-mail numbers of all authors and should indicate the
primary author and the contact person. The main body of cases,
papers, and proposals should have a title only. Cases will be
double blind reviewed. Field researched cases are especially
    encouraged.

Student authors should be identified as such on the cover page.
To be considered for the best student case award, no faculty
member may be included as co-author. However, such cases should
state the faculty supervisor(s), if any, on the cover page.

    6. Authorization forms and format information for case summaries
are available from track chairs or the Vice President Programs.

    7. Two types of Proceedings will be published. Session Proceedings
will publish all cases and teaching notes complete as presented.
NACRA's comprehensive Proceedings will include a one page case
summary. If possible, authors should submit that summary for
inclusion in the Proceedings when they submit their cases for
    review.

Abbreviated versions of competitive papers may also be published
in the Proceedings. Instructions for preparation will be
    furnished upon acceptance.

    8. Individuals wishing to participate in the program as reviewers,
session chairs, or session recorders should contact the
appropriate track chair, or the VP-Programs. Your assistance is
valued, and will be recognized in the program. A form to list
your areas of capability is in the packet and will be available
from the VP Programs or from track chairs.

    9. Each case must be accompanied by an instructor's manual
(teaching note) which should include the following material:
    Case Overview Analysis
    Objectives References (if needed)
Intended Courses and Levels Epilogue (if appropriate)
    Discussion Questions and Answers

The instructor's manual should have a cover page similar to the
case. The main body of the instructor's manual should have the
case title and the words "Instructor's Manual" only.

    10. Cases and papers submitted must not have been published
previously or accepted for publication elsewhere, either in a
journal or in a book. Cases presented in other workshops may be
submitted, provided that they have undergone substantial
revision since that presentation. Such prior presentation
should be noted upon the cover page.

    11. Awards: the Curtis E. Tate award is awarded for the best case
each year, as judged by its final condition after revision which
considers the comments made upon each case & its teaching
manual. Students also compete for a similar award open to
    student cases only.

Papers, panels, and other innovative submissions should be directed to
the V.P. Programs. We especially desire submissions treating
conversion of research cases into teaching cases, contrasts between
case research in differing disciplines, and teaching issues.

A packet of useful information, including guidelines to prepare your
one page summary for the _Proceedings_, required content of the
instructor's manual, and other helpful information, may be obtained
from your track chair, the V.P. Programs, or his departmental
    secretary.

    SPECIAL TRACK: CASE IDEA DEVELOPMENT
New and seasoned case researchers may submit their ideas for case
research & writing. In a give-and-take session, expect to discuss
your questions and uncertainties. Among such topics: use of public
source material or of inside information, how to gain access, what to
include, what to omit, case formats, use of consulting information,
disguise, etc., etc. A delayed deadline will apply; contact the
special track chair. Submit your case ideas, in a well-thought out
summary of up to three pages, to the special track chair:
