I joined this list, looking for a wide variety of material that would aid
my interests in effective teaching and in case research. I'm finding some
material of use, and also much that will interest many others but not me.
That is to be expected. Then what is my beef? Three things:

    1. Far too many of you reply to the net when it would be more appropriate
to reply to the sender only. Please, use the general reply only when
others might be interested - and skip broadcasting the "me too" type
messages to the entire net. The headings of this net make it easy to
reply only to the sender, or to the entire net, as may be most
    appropriate.

    2. Many more include the entire received message - when it's not
necessary, or when only a part of the received message is necessary.
Replies that consists of many screens of the original message are
unnecessary. Please, consider carefully before answering "Y" to the
question, "Include original message in reply?": and if you do include it,
edit it down to the essentials.

    3. Whereas some are purists, I don't mind some commercial messages. But
I do object to long commercial discussions - particularly when they could
    be conducted privately.

I expect clutter on any net I sign onto, but there's rather too much on
this one. I've noticed some sign off messages [broadcast to the net
    rather than using the sign-off protocol distributed when we signed on];
perhaps others have become more concerned than I have been?

To me, this net is beginning to get unwieldy - there are very many
messages - many messages are very long and say relatively little that is
new. May I make two suggestions that will help:

    1. When your reply is intended to go only to the originator, then DO NOT
reply to the entire net; just to the originator. This may require you to
write down the e-mail address of your target, not to blindly hit the reply
    key.

    2. When you do reply to either the net or the originator, it is often not
needed to include any of the original message. Don't include the
original message unless essential; and then please edit out the
    non-essential portions.

Remember that each message you send goes to perhaps 500 people, and that
there appear to be perhaps 30 or 40 messages each day on this net.

    Tim,
you're off the mark on the numbers. MG-ED-DV has more
    than 700 members now.
