innovative and interactive activities designed to stimulate their thinking
and enhance their skills and knowledge in management education and
development.
If this description fits you, I want to invite you to attend the Management
Education and Development division's pre-conference program at the Academy
of Management in Boston. As many of you know, the pre-conference, with its
innovative and highly involving and interactive sessions, has become one of
the most exciting parts of the conference. Sessions for academics,
practitioners, and doctoral students begin on Saturday, August 9 at 8:00
a.m. and run until noon on Sunday, August 10.
What's in store? Judith Neal, Editor of the "Spirit at Work" newsletter and
Lee Bolman co-author of "Leading with Soul" will be facilitating an
interactive session on "Teaching with Soul" which will give participants an
opportunity to explore teaching as a spiritual journey. Participants will
discuss stages of spiritual development and look at the gifts they bring to
the classroom. (Saturday, 2:00-4:00 p.m.)
Marvelle Colby is coordinating a session on "Write the 'Right' Assessment
Outcome Measures" which will provide insight into the three most used
models with the outcome that participants will write the one that works for
them and their needs. (Sunday, 8:00-9:45 a.m.)
"Values Run Through It" will explore how we influence and are influenced by
our professional associations and how we can use these different foci to
create a more holistic approach to our teaching and scholarship. (Saturday,
12:30-1:45 p.m.)
For all of you doctoral students, Jill Purdy and Patricia Fandt are
coordinating our "Doctoral Consortium: Current Tools for Teaching
Effectiveness" which will run from 12:30-6:30 p.m. on Saturday. For more

We are also co-sponsoring a number of sessions.
"Managing the Technology Classroom: Preparing Ourselves and Our Students,"
will give participants an opportunity to explore approaches to enhancing
their use of technology in their teaching. (Saturday, 10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.)
During "Lessons Learned: The Experience of Teaching Diversity in the
Classroom" experienced diversity teachers will share insights from their
experiences and attendees will participate in two diversity exercises, one
aimed at an undergraduate audience and one aimed at an MBA audience.
Everyone will leave the session with a "diversity notebook." (Saturday,
4:15-6:00 p.m.)
Of special interest to practitioners, is a series of five practitioner
sessions facilitated by Chris Argyris of Harvard. These are interactive
sessions designed to explore new ways of learning. The audience will be
composed of a nearly equal mix of executives and academics. Participants
may elect to attend individual sessions, but are encouraged to attend

"The Call to Serve" is a three session series on service learning which
will include an opportunity in one session for participants to engage in an
actual service learning activity. Preregistration is suggested, so if you

"Innovative Tools and Techniques for Teaching International Business" will
include on-going displays as well as simultaneous presentations on
individual tools every half hour. So, be sure to drop in and see the latest
simulations, internet and computer innovations, video applications, and
more that are available. This is a great format because it will allow you
to come away with some specific tools and techniques. (Sunday, 8:00
a.m.-12:00 p.m.)
"An Organizational Perspective on Creating International Networks: The
Eastern Academy of Management's Experience of Institutionalizing an
Experiment" is a session for people interested in developing international
conferences which EAM has done so successfully for the past 10 years.
