    CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT & CALL FOR REGISTRATION

    THIRD AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SYSTEMS CONFERENCE
    1-4 OCTOBER 1997
    THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND, GATTON

    MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE ORGANISING COMMITTEE

    We invite you to participate in the Third Australia and New Zealand
    Systems Conference at Gatton in Queensland, Australia. The focus of the
    conference is on the use of systems thinking and methods in solving
    difficult challenges in a diverse and dynamic world. These challenges
    cross many arenas including industry, commerce, farming, forestry,
    environment, tourism, and service-provision. These arenas include
    public services, private companies, universities, community
    organisations and individuals.

    To reflect these diverse challenges, the principal theme for the
    conference is 'Linking People, Nature, Business and Technology'. The
    conference will identify and stimulate work in Australia and New Zealand
    in organisational and environmental management and learning. We expect
    many major thinkers and leading practitioners from our geographical area
    to be there.

    In reflecting the practice of systems research and practice, the
    activities of the conference will be diverse and emergent as well as
    programmed. The activities will include:
    * Plenary addresses by keynote speakers;
    * Presentations of refereed papers (blind double refereed);
    * Posters, papers, extended abstracts, work in progress and other
    non-refereed contributions;
    * Planned and emergent workshops to delve deeply into particular
    areas;
    * Role plays, business games and simulations;
    * Small informal and formal discussion groups;
    * Evening social events.

    The theme of the conference will be addressed through a number of
    streams dealing specifically with:
    * Action learning
    * Soft systems methodology
    * Learning organisations
    * Farming systems
    * Organisational change
    * Complexity : self-organising systems & chaos
    * Eco-tourism

    The closing date for program submissions, for documents to be included
    in the Conference Proceedings, and for early-bird registrations is 18th
    August 1997. Registrations can be accepted at any time, including
    on-site.
