1997 ORGANIZATION SCIENCE PROPOSAL COMPETITION
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS AND REVIEWERS
The Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition, now
in its 7th year, is one of the most prestigious competitions available
to doctoral students studying organizational issues. Past winners
are now on the faculties of Stanford, Wharton, and UCLA. Please
consider competing if you are a doctoral candidate and consider
participating as a reviewer if you are a faculty member.
COMPETITORS:
Any doctoral student working in any area of organization science
who has defended their dissertation proposal by 4 September 1997
and who is expected to complete their dissertation by the end of 1998
is eligible to participate. Advisors, please encourage your best
students to submit.
Proposals will be judged based on soundness of theory,
methodological rigor and contribution to the field. In
keeping with the mission of the INFORMS College on Organization Science,
boldness and innovation will be emphasized. Proposals addressing
issues related to organization theory, behavior, cognition and/or strategy
are welcome.
Applicants must submit 4 copies of a proposal, including theory
development, method and contribution. Proposals may be
no more than 15 double-spaced pages, including title page and abstract.
Up to 10 additional pages of references and appendices may be attached.
Your name and affiliation may appear ONLY on the title page.
Applications must be received by end-of-day, Thursday, 4 September 1997.
Do NOT fax or e-mail submissions; only hard-copy submissions will be
accepted.
Each application must include a letter from the applicant?s
dissertation advisor nominating the student. The letter must certify
that the applicant was admitted to candidacy by 4 September 1997
and is likely to complete the dissertation research in 1998.
Finalists will present their research in a workshop at the Dallas
INFORMS meetings, 26-29 October 1997. At the workshop,
finalists will receive detailed feedback from the panel of highly
respected organizational scholars who will serve as final judges for
the competition.
First prize includes registration, lodging and $500 toward airfare for
the 1998 Organization Science Winter Conference, which will be held 2-5
January 1998 in Park City Utah (location to be confirmed). It also
includes a one-year subscription to ORGANIZATION SCIENCE.
REVIEWERS:
Reviewers will receive a small number of 15-page proposals for assessment
and comment during the month of September. The time commitment
is small; the proposals are interesting; and the gratitude of your
colleagues will be enormous. You will also be invited to
participate in the wine and cheese reception honoring the finalists
at the Dallas Conference, where the winners will be announced.
