We are developing a new MBA course on Management Consulting. Do any of you
have a tried and true syllabus that you could share with me? What are your
    favorite course texts/readings? Thanks much!

    Charles,
They have the same course at Barry University in Miami FL. If you
contact the MBA department, I'm sure they would send you a copy. The
    web site is Barry.edu.
    Hope this helps.

    Charles,
I am currently teaching a consulting course at USC's MBA and Executive MBA
program. I use David Maister's book (Managing the Professional Service
Firm, Free Press 1993), Greiner & Metzger's Book (Consulting to Management,
Prentice Hall 1983 - a bit outdated but great structure), and Peter Block's
"Flawless Consulting" (somebody mentioned this already). Also, the
Economist had a great survey on Consulting in their March 22 1997 issue.
I also have compiled a reader with 20 or so articles and cases (there are
great cases on Bain & Co and on Andersen, both with HBP).

I have structured the course along 4 parallel tracks:
    1) Theme Track - These are themes related to the subject (industry
overview, Types and roles of consulting, skill requirements, proposal
writing, contracting, data collection, etc. etc.)

    2) Project Track - students form 10 teams (minimum size: 2, maximum: 4) to
do a field project. They chose their own clients and have to conduct a
real-life consulting project. Starting with the third unit, every unit a
different team has to do a "big" (45 minutes) presentation of their project
with a feedback and sharing session. This way, the class gets ample
opportunity to discuss consulting issues in different stages of the
consulting process (e.g. proposal writing, data collection, diagnosis,
recommendations...). Also, each team has to submit reports at certain
milestones (Proposal, detailed methodology, preliminary reprot, final
report). Thsi also helps the teams to stay on track timewise. They have to
present their findings to their clients (outside class). At the end, I have
a panel of clients come to class to discuss the experience.

    3) Case track - I use 4-5 cases to discuss differenbt approaches and
    specific consulting situations

    4) Speaker track - I have almost every unit a guest speaker from consulting
firms (Partner level). I try to have a good mix of large firms, medium
boutiques, and solo practitioners as well as different functional
specialization (strategy, Organization, Reengineering, OD, etc).

As you live in the LA area, we also can meet if you like. I'd be more than
happy to share my material with you.

    Dear Charles,

We are attempting to develop a course in organization development which
seems to fit with your course of consulting to management. Hence, I'd be
grateful if you would forward any syllabi that you receive from your
    request. Thanks a bunch.
