Dear Management Education and Development Discussion Group members:
One of the main objectives of the 4th International Conference on
Competence-Based Management will be to take a close look at the
interactions of management education and practice with the processes for
development of management theory and research. On behalf of my
co-organizers, Profs. Bente Lowendahl and Aime Heene, I would like to
invite all group members interested in this aspect of management education
and development to contribute paper, panel, or round table proposals and to
join us in Oslo this June.
Please refer to the conference announcement below and to the conference
website "www.cbm.net" for details.
Thanks -- and hope to see you in Oslo,
Ron Sanchez

Announcement and Call for Papers, Panels, and Round Tables
Fourth International Conference on
Competence-Based Management
June 18-20, 1998
Norwegian School of Management, Oslo, Norway
Theme of Conference:
Competence-Based Management: Theory, Practice, and Education
Objectives of the Conference:
The emerging theory of competence-based management is the work of a growing
movement to reinvigorate management theory, research, practice, and
education by adopting a more dynamic, systemic, cognitive, and holistic
approach to the management process. This conference will build on the
development and application of competence theory undertaken at three prior
conferences (1992, 1993, 1995) and in resulting publications:
(1) To further develop and extend the concepts, applications, and research
already underway in competence-based management theory.
(2) To enlarge the domain of management issues addressed by mainstream
management theory, research, education, and practice.
(3) To demonstrate the ways in which competence theory enables integration
of multiple perspectives in management theory, research, practice, and
education.
(4) To develop and improve the theoretical linkages between the competence
perspective and other perspectives in management, including the
resource-based view, transactions costs analysis, options theory, strategic
flexibility, systems theory, human resources management, etc.
(5) To consider alternatives to current institutional practices that can
help to re-connect management theory, education, and practice.
(6) To begin a discussion of alternative approaches to management
education suggested by competence theory's dynamic, systemic, cognitive,
and holistic view of the management process.
Conference Format:
1. Presentations of reviewed papers, with comments by discussants
2. Panels for presentation and discussion of new ideas and issues
3. Round tables for informal and in-depth discussion of defined topics in
competence-based management theory, research, practice, and education
