One of the best books on competencies is Competence
at Work by Lyle Spencer (of Hay/McBer). This
provides an overview of the history of competencies
(from McClleland) and a detailed process for
identifying and developing compentencies in
organizational settings. It explains competencies as
they were originally conceived, not as they have
become popularized recently (almost any job skill).
Provides a very solid foundation for anyone venturing
into competencies for the first time.
