    FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

    Third International Conference
    MANAGING ACROSS BORDERS
    CROSS-CULTURAL ISSUES IN MANAGERIAL STUDIES

    June 4-6, 1998 - Lugano (Switzerland), Università della Svizzera Italiana

    AIDEA Giovani, the Junior Faculty Network of the Italian Academy of
    Management, announces its Third International Conference in Lugano, in the
    campus of Università della Svizzera Italiana. The topic for this year is
    Managing across Borders: Cross-cultural Issues in Managerial Studies.

    The aim of the Conference is to provide a forum for discussing the managerial
    implications of the multiplicity of cultures within and outside organisations.
    The importance of addressing cultural differences in managing organisations
    has been widely acknowledged by both scholars and managers in the last decade.
    However, research in this area has mainly focused on the influence of
    different national cultures on the policies and operations of multinational
    organisations. In doing so, these interpretive frameworks have considered
    culture as something different from both organisations and individuals. The
    acknowledgment of the multi-faceted nature of cultures as social artefacts
    implies a need for new approaches in addressing such an issue. The
    reconceptualisation of conventional distinctions seems to be a promising
    reasearch agenda.

    Submissions are therefore welcome on issues including, but in no way limited to:
    ¨ influences of different cultural paradigms and institutional contexts in
    managing organisations;
    ¨ the role of management in coping with conflicts generated by cultural and
    institutional differences;
    ¨ institutional and individual carriers/modifiers of organisational and
    national cultures;
    ¨ managerial aspects of discrimination in the workplace;
    ¨ the impact on management practices of trans-national agreements and
    supra-national regulatory bodies (e.g. accounting regulations);
    ¨ organisational impact of co-existing trends towards globalisation and
    regionalisation of production policies and consumer behaviour;
    ¨ opportunities and constraints entailed by the cross-fertilisation of
    management styles and techniques (e.g. transferability of local
    organisational knowledge).

    SUBMISSIONS. Different types of papers are suited for this complex issue
    (e.g., empirical and field studies, historical analyses, theoretical pieces,
    quantitative and qualitative research). Comparative approaches will be
    especially appreciated.
    You are invited to submit a detailed abstract highlighting the methodology to
    be adopted and the expected scientific contribution of your paper.
    On the title page of the abstract please include the names, full addresses,
    relevant phone and fax numbers and E-mail addresses for all authors. On the
    first page of the abstract place only the title at the top of the page - no
    author’s names or affiliations - and then begin the abstract.
    The Conference is mainly targeted to assistant professors and Ph.D.
    candidates, but senior faculty members are welcome to submit their proposals
    as well.

    All abstracts should be received by January 31, 1998 latest at the
    following address:
    Professor Albino Zgraggen
    Università della Svizzera Italiana
    Via Ospedale 13
    6900 - Lugano (Switzerland)
    fax (+41-91) 912-4647
    E-mail albino.zgraggen@lu.usi.ti-edu.ch
    Fax and E-mail submissions will be accepted. They will undergo a double-blind
    review, and acceptance or non-acceptance will be notified in writing by March
    15, 1998. Authors of selected submissions are expected to provide a full paper
    by May 15, 1998.

    THE ORGANIZATION. AIDEA Giovani, the Junior Faculty Network of the Italian
    Academy of Management, is a six-year old association consisting of junior
    faculty members and Ph.D. candidates who are interested in advancing academic
    research and teaching in the area of management studies. AIDEA Giovani has
    been created under the auspices of AIDEA (Accademia Italiana di Economia
    Aziendale - The Italian Academy of Management), a member of IFSAM (The
    International Federation of Scholarly Associations in Management).
    AIDEA Giovani has about 300 members, coming from all sizes of public and
    private Italian universities. AIDEA Giovani arranges one national and one
    international conference (in English) every year, as well as a number of
    specialized workshops and seminars.

    THE 1997 LOCATION. The Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) was
    established in 1995 in order to endow the Italian-speaking community of
    Switzerland with its own higher education institution.
    The School of Management started operations in 1996 in Lugano (Canton Ticino).
    The Faculty, as well as the student body, draw from a number of differenent
    national backgrounds, in keeping with the multi-cultural character of
    Switzerland. The emphasis on internationalization is further highlighted by
    the number of cooperation agreements with foreign academic institutions which
    USI has already managed to establish.
    Lugano is located on the beautiful lake bearing the same name, and can be
    easily reached by plane, by train or by car either from Switzerland (Zürich
    airport) or from Italy (Milano-Linate or Milano-Malpensa airports).
