To cut through the muck and get directly to things that work,
check out every book and article you can find that was written
by Norman R. F. Maier, the late distinguished professor of
psychology. You'll also find that he did a lot of interesting
studies with rats, which are a lot like people. It's said that
he turned from studying rats to studying people because people
were "more fun." His classic book on group facilitation is
"Problem-solving Discussions and Conferences: Leadership Methods
and Skills." You'll find it in any major library.
