preparing students for tests (MG-ED)

    Howdy,

I just started grading the first exams in this semester's undergrad OB course.  So far, they are REALLY not doing well.  The students have known from the first day of class that they would have a test today, on 6 textbook chapters.  They knew the format:  5 definitions (drawn from the "key terms" section of each chapter), 10 multiple choice (which can come from anywhere in the chapter), and 4 essays of which they had to answer 3 (essays were taken directly from the discussion questions at the end of each chapter).  During each class, my lectures cover the main points of each chapter, and we do some sort of experiential activity or discussion almost every class.  I tell them the importance of studying the chapters as we go through the semester, not just the night before the test.  And yet, I can tell that very few of them will fall in the B range, let alone the A range.  It's been a while since I've taught this course at the undergrad level.  I usually teach it to MBAs, and my approach is very different.

    My questions:
1:  How do you prepare your students for exams?
2:  What types of exams do you give your undergraduate OB students?
