Annual Convention Service Activity: What Matters Most
by Dr. Dennis Briscoe, Univ. of San Diego
COME SERVE AND LEARN!
In San Diego, convention attendees will have an opportunity to spend
some quality time helping in our host city. ThePublic/Nonprofit
Division, in conjunction with the Academy's Service-Learning Network
and local hosts, are sponsoring a series of activities to give
Academy members a chance to see San Diego from a different
perspective, to give something back to San Diego for being our
Convention host, and to learn something about the "underside" of
America's Greatest City.
On Saturday afternoon (8 August from 1:00 to 4:00), prior to the
opening of the convention, we will meet at 1:00 pm for a brief
orientation to service-learning by Dr. Edward Zlotkowski of the
American Association of HIgher Education. Second Chance, a local
nonprofit, will then organize us into various service teams. Second
Chance serves the homeless by giving them job skills and work habits
through various projects that help the community in an effort to
return these individuals to the mainstream.
Please check the Preconference schedule, under Public/Nonprofit
Division, for precise meeting location.
After the short orientation to our projects and what we will be
experiencing, we will be split into 3 or 4 service groups to work on
projects designed to expose the participants to lower-income neighbor-
hoods or poorer areas of downtown. In all cases, Academy members will
work alongside members of the homeless population in San Diego. At
the end of the work, we will reconvene to reflect on our experiences,
again led by Edward Zlotkowski. We will consider how to use work with
these types of organizations in our classes to teach students about
topics of interest to management, organizations, and human resources.
The projects will include the following:
1. Grafitti paintover with Urban Corps in the downtown area.
2. Painting of a home in a low-income neighborhood.
3. Tree planting in a poor area of downtown.
4. Advertising button manufacturing with Second Chance
(this is a project of Second Chance that employs a number of
homeless people).
Materials will be provided, but participants should wear clothes that
you are not afraid to get dirty or get paint on. Shorts and T-shirts
are OK. Since you will be outside, you might want to wear a hat (we
can pretty much guarantee sun in August!) and bring sun block.
The cost will be $30 (at the site) to reimburse the
organizations for materials and tools, to pay for transportation, and,
if there are any moneys left over, to partially reimburse the
organizations for their administrative expenses in setting up this
service project. All participants will receive a special Academy
T-shirt.
