There is a software propgram called NUD.IST which deals with the data
from interviews and other similar qualitative sources and helps to sort it
into patterns. A number of my colleagues have used it. It produces linkagfes
    and branched diagrams automatically.

I you are interested I will provide more information. It is mentioned in
    some qualitative research methods books

Dear Professor Harris, I am sure there are many of us who would be
interested in acquiring the NUD.IST software. Can you provide information
regarding its acquisition? Thanks, Kim Boal

I believe there is a better program than NUD*IST. In any case, those programs
are very expensive, if that's a consideration. Using them does require some
professional background as an ethnographer; otherwise, clever as the programs
are in sorting, etc., the result is, as they say, "Garbage in, garbage out."

Re Leon Levitt's comment: good point.

In any case, for those who consider using NUD.IST or similar software:
there was an extensive discussion on this topic on QUALNET quite some time
ago. You might find a brief summary of references (both on qualitative
research and related software) useful (please note, there may be newer
editions etc. since this QUALNET discussion):

Quite a few software providers have WWW-pages and demo/test versions of
    their programs available.

An example: For the "Ethnograph", see

still alive, you may want to surf a bit and try their homepage too, there
    are links to other programs.)

    Leon,

I would like to know about inexpensive alternatives to NUD.IST that you or any of the
list members can suggest. I just finished such a project so my interest is piqued.

    Thanks very much,

    T.J. et al.:
I don't know of any inexpensive ones. My wife, who is professor of anthropology at UM and a professional ethnographer,
uses another that she prefers; unfortunately (for more reasons than this), she is in Africa on an extended study, took the
stuff with her, will not be back until July; and I don't remember the name of it. I'll file this exchange, try to answer
you more concretely when she gets back.

Re: The interest thread concerning qualitative data analysis software.

I have a brochure which says (inter alia):

QSR NUD.IST is software designed to aid researchers in handling
Non-numerical Unstructured Data by supporting processes of Indexing,
Searching and Theorizing. . . . and is available in versions for
Windows or Apple Macintosh computers. QSR Merge, available
separately, allows several NUD.IST projects to be merged even if
    created on different platfoms.

QSR NUD.IST was designed by academics at LaTrobe University
(Melbourne, Australia) and is now produced by Qualitative Solutions
and Research Pty Ltd based at the LaTrobe University R&D Park. It
has been sold in over 40 countries and is distributed by SCOLARI,
the software division of Sage Publications.

For more information on QSR, or to download a demonstration copy of
QSR NUD.IST, visit the QSR websites at:

    http://www.qsr.com.au
    http://qsr.latrobe.edu.au/

I have not tested these URLs. My information came from Sage
Publications, UK, who can be reached on e-mail at:

    nudist@sageltd.co.uk

Hope this information meets the needs of those interested.
