Mark, my man,
I'll give a line of five to one, that you've kicked a sleeping
giant. I hope we have organizational authors on our list. I claim to
be one, but haven't written as extensively as my favorites. My
"favored favorite", and the one that seems to have stood up best in the
management literature, is Miles and Snow. 1978. Organizational
strategy, structure and process. McGraw Hill
Mintzberg is much more entertaining reading. I'd recommend
Mintzberg. 1989. Mintzberg on Management<HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS>.; and 1979, the structuring
of Organizations. Prentice Hall.
Michael Porter of Harvard has also written a ton as have many
in your local business school.
They'll all be available through your local libe or using their
inter-library loan. Good reading.
To me researchers trying to understand organizational structures are
like the blind touching an elephant: it could be a wall, a rope or a
mop; depending on the context.
Cheers...
Bruce
