Not necessarily research but Lewis Carroll wrote some years ago and has
been quoted so often that a strong indication of common sense now prevails,
to wit, if you don't know where you are going any path is good enough. It
may be paraphrased to say that if you don't care enough to be clear then
you can't get criticized for muddling through.
Note that this is not a criticism of those who desire vague mission
statements, it is a note that says their form of mission statement is an
indication of their preferred "survival" strategy.
