In brief, Gregory Wilkie has been asked to develop the next level of management development course for personnel. He specified that the course be survey-based and address high-level management skills. He asked for recommendations on content, activities, and surveys that could be used for the course.
Dan Booth (800 332-6684) and I with others from a corporate university have developed a course that closely matches the specifications. The title, objectives, preparation, and outline of that course is as follows:
Mastering the Skills of Master Managers
Objectives
1. Identify management practices that are most important to getting improved business results.
2. Develop a workable action plan to develop critical areas of your management performance.
3. Demonstrate improved performance at the end of the action plan period with SMP re-testing.
Course Preparation
Each participating manager will receive a packet of 10 computer scored questionnaires, and return envelopes at least three weeks prior to the course. The questionnaire that will be used is The Survey of Management Practices (SMP). This questionnaire focuses on managerial skills. Each participant will be asked to complete one about him/herself, to ask the person that he/she reports to to complete one, and to ask eight associates to each complete one. At least four of the associates should be direct reports of the participant. The remaining questionnaires can be given to peers or additional direct reports. All individuals who complete the questionnaire will be asked to seal them in the provided postage-paid envelope and return them. To protect the associates* anonymity, participants will receive only the associates* aggregated responses in a computer generated report. The only copy of the aggregated report that will be made will be the one the participating manager receives. The purpose for this course is the development of managerial skills and not the evaluation of the manager.
