OCIS and MED Co-sponsoring Internet Worskhop at Academy of Management
Meetings
The OCIS and MED divisions of the Academy of Management are co-sponsoring
a workshop on "Innovative Uses of Information Technology to Extend the
Management Classroom", to be held on Sunday August 9 from 8:30am to 12:00
noon at the Academy of Management meetings in San Diego. The session will
focus on innovative uses of information technology to extend the
management classroom. These uses include both distance learning
applications (e.g., Duke's innovative Global Executive MBA program) and
uses of information technology to enhance the traditional classroom (e.g.
Univeristy of Nebraska's use of group decision support technology in a
collaborative classroom).
The session will begin with a panel discussion in which panelists from
OCIS and MED briefly describe how they have used information technology in
teaching: George Marakis (University of Maryland), Suzi Iacona (Boston
University), Gerry DeSanctis (Duke University, and Paul van Vliet and/or
Leah Pietron (University of Nebraska at Omaha). A final panelist, Nancy
Berger (George Washington University) will provide a student perspective
by discussing her experiences in a distance learning course. The panel
discussions will be followed by questions from the audience.
The second half of the workshop involves break-out roundtable sessions, in
which workshop participants discuss their experiences in using information
technology in business education. Each roundtable will be facilitated by
either a panelist from the first half of the workshop or by one of the
following: Brian Butler (Carnegie Mellon), Chuck Morrissey (Pepperdine
University) and Thomas Bryant (Brock Univesity).
The session is limited to 50 people, and continental breakfast will be
provided, so pre-registration is advised. For questions or
pre-registration, contact JoAnne Yates via email at
jyates@mit.edu or by
leaving a message at 617-253-7157. Email communication is greatly
preferred over phone messages.
