Dear Academy of Management member -
For the fourth straight year, members of the Academy of
Management will
have
the opportunity to participate in a project providing service to a
non-profit organization in the host city during the Academy's annual
meeting. The session includes time for learning about the
organization,
its
mission, and organizational challenges, and for discussing how to
incorporate this or similar service-learning activities into management
education. Participants in past projects have found them to be
enjoyable
and worthwhile experiences, and you are invited to participate in this
year's project.
This year the project (session #78, p. B20 in the Academy program)
will
be
sponsored by SIM, ONE, MED and PNP. It will be held at Covenant
House
Toronto, Canada's largest youth shelter, which is the official charity
of
the 2000 meetings. (Covenant House will be receiving the proceeds
from
the
annual meeting's t-shirt sales). Covenant House serves homeless
young
people, generally ages 16-18, with shelter, medical care, counseling
services, and directed activities. More details on the activities of
Covenant House can be found on page A20 of the program, at the
Covenant
House international web site at
http://www.covenanthouse.org/ or at
the
Covenant House Toronto web site at
http://www.covenanthouse.on.ca/covenant.html
The specific project location will be a room on the second floor of
Covenant
House that serves as a break room for the youth, a place where
they can
meet
with their social workers, and a shift change room for the staff. The
project will involve cleaning and painting this room, and may also
involve
some cleaning, rearranging, and sanding/restaining or repainting of
cabinets
in the room. Participants should wear old clothes that you don't mind
getting paint splattered on, and might wish to bring gloves and
painting
hats or scarves.
The service-learning project schedule on Friday, August 4th is as
follows:
9-9:20 Meet near front desk of Royal York Hotel
9:30-10 Walk to Covenant House
10-11 Introduction to / tour of Covenant House, by its PR director
