Announcing a symposium at the AOM Conference this August with a unique
perspective on virtual management education!
There are several interesting symposia and sessions on technology and
its relationship to our educational mission. Some of these look to give
us important guidance, based on the experiences of our colleagues, in
our attempt to address those "how to" questions when our institutions
have made or signaled their commitment in this direction to the delivery
of management knowledge. Our symposium, "Virtual Management Education:
An Exploration into Unknown Spaces," takes a different twist and offers
a framework for discussing the "why's" associated with an institution's
commitment of resources to this new pedagogical model. We plan to
address questions such as "What got us to this point?, What can we
expect next?, What are the important cultural, philosophical,
technological, ethical, and political issues to consider as we decide
how
far to continue down this path?, and Is this really much different than
where we've been with the delivery of management knowledge in recent
history?" We use the metaphor of Lewis and Clark's Westward expedition
to establish a framework for discussing the promises, threats, and
realities of venturing into the uncharted domain of Virtual higher
education.
The symposium will be presented at the conference on Monday, Aug. 10,
from 4:10 to 5:30 p.m. in the Marriott North, San Diego Room C. Details
can be found on page 65 of the conference program. We would like to
thank the MED, OCIS, and TIM divisions of the Academy for their joint
sponsorship of this session.
The complete contents of this symposium proposal and information on
other conference symposia can be viewed at
http://www.aom.pace.edu/symposia/ This symposium is currently posted at
the bottom of the page with a post date of 7-20-98 and Chair: Daniel K.
Spangler. Please take some time to review this proposal and then come
to the session to see what's developed since the first of this year and
add some perspectives of your own to the discussion!
We encourage you to consider attending and contributing to this
symposium and the many other interesting sessions on Virtual learning
technology.
Sincerely,
Daniel K. Spangler, Symposium Chair
