With regard to the discussion about email programs, difficulties,
capabilities, and costs:
Dave Ackerman (University of Alaska Southeast) referred to Pegasus Mail.
It was originally written by my university's head of computer services,
David Harris. He still does some work for the University of Otago, but
also works for a number of other organizations, from my understanding
primarily Novell.
Pegasus is, and always has been, entirely free. No cost - free download,
manuals as on-line help, not shareware but freeware. This is for anyone -
public, private, corporate, government.
It also happens to be one of the most reliable and powerful email programs
available. For a description of an earlier version, refer to a review in
PC Magazine, 8 October 1996, p. 199. The program has of course been
improved several times since then. It runs on Windows, DOS, Macs, and
more. Its key strength is message filtering and filing, and dealing with
attachments. I have not lost any messages in six years of using it, and
have tens of thousands still on file, easily accessible, along with
thousands of downloaded attachments. Thus, I'll vouch for its robustness
and versatility. Its ease of use is a bit tougher to describe - I love it
because I know what an email program should be able to do; it has very
many options, almost frighteningly so, if you're a novice.
As PC Magazine summarized it, "Pegasus Mail is powerful enough to use as
the basis of a corporate mail system, and customizable enough to give
individual users unparalleled control over the mail they receive. If you
prefer power to ease of use, this remarkable program may be your first
choice."
