Rationale for Workshop
This workshop builds directly on the very successful Academy 2000 MED
Workshop titled Changing Times: Changing Places, which explored three
important contexts in which management education is now offered (global
locations, work-based locations and virtual locations). Over forty people
attended this workshop and there was a consensus that the 2001 Academy
Conference MED PDW should continue the discussion by focusing on one
particular issue which emerged for participants: the way in which in many
countries government funding is integral to the provision of higher
education, but how we now live in an era where many governments are curbing
their educational spending. This leaves universities looking for alternative
sources of income.
One common way in which universities seek to raise revenue is through
engaging in international teaching activities, often in the form of an
international partnership. In this highly interactive workshop we examine
four such partnerships:
 international campus-based partnerships
 international local-provider partnerships
 international virtual partnerships
 international cross-sector partnerships.
Short presentations by expert management educators relevant to each of these
partnerships will be followed by breakout groups addressing:
What are the main features of each partnership?
 When should it be used?
 What are the pitfalls?
What are the secrets to using it successfully?
If your university or school is moving down this track then this workshop is
for you! Come and share your experiences and/or listen to those who are
involved in different partnerships.
No pre-registration required
