How can we push the "interactivity/connectivity" element of the Internet
/WWW for educational/training purposes? At a recent caucus on Team Teaching
on the Internet at the Academy of Management we discussed different types,
and levels, of electronic interactions among students across Universities.
We are posting this list compiled by Prof. Dilip Mirchandani, Rowan College
in the hope that it will help in designing interactive student projects. If
any of you could add to this list we would be grateful.
In increasing order of complexity:
1) Students participate in/post comment(s) to a bulletin board
devoted to specific topic. BB runs for a limited period e.g., two
weeks, instructors evaluate individual students participation and
contribution.
2) Students exchange information, once or a few times, with assigned
counterpart(s) at another University on specified topic.
3) Student Teams, comprised of students from various Universities,
create a web page dedicated to a agreed upon topic complete with
content, links, etc.
4) Student Teams, comprised of students from various Universities,
work on a case over a period of 4 to 6 weeks and create a complete
case analysis report as a group. They may use e-mail, ftp, or web
based methods of communication and document sharing. A la the
Internet in the Classroom effort that has been ongoing for the past 4
years.
5) Student Teams, comprised of students from various Universities,
work together to manage a simulated firm in competition with other
such teams. Many good simulations are available. Using something like
Weboard to allow browser access to a private virtual conference room
for each team will facilitate such an activity.
