Journal of Management Education
Special Issue Call For Papers
INNOVATIVE USES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
Guest Editors: Larry Mainstone and Dean Schroeder (Valparaiso University)
Submission Deadline: November 15, 1998
The ongoing emergence and development of information-based technologies
significantly affects management education. In many ways, this impact is
following classic patterns. Emergent technologies find initial
applications in automating existing tasks and activities. Only with time,
as the technology improves and becomes more flexible, and as complementary
technologies become available, is the technology's full advantage realized.
Achieving this potential often requires radically rethinking basic tasks,
and questions long-standing assumptions. We find ourselves at this
transfoermational stage in management education. The power and flexibility
of new technologies are challenging teaching/learning paradigms. We face
both the opportunities and the difficulties associated with rapidly
developing new technologies.
In this special issue of the Journal of Management Education, we seek
conceptual and empirical manuscripts that assess the status of new
technologies in management education, identify current and potential
effects, and identify the challenges and opportunities. Additionally,
and consistent with JME's mission, we are also looking for manuscripts on
the practical application of technology in experiential exercises,
instructional material exploiting new technology, and reflections on
the impact of technology. We encourage, but do not limit, contributions
on the following topics:
Main Articles:
* The impact of technology on teaching and learning paradigms.
* The challenges and limitations of using technology to teach management.
* Empirical evidence regarding the impact of technology on learning outcomes.
* The financial and human cost-effectiveness of using technology to deliver
management education.
* The institutional changes required to support new technology-intensive
pedagogies.
Ideas, Inquiries and Observations:
* Experience with designing and using web based courses.
Experiential Exercises, Activities and Simulations that:
* Use technology to teach management concepts and/or skills.
* Show how technology can improve the practice of management.
* Teach students how to effectively use technology to become better managers.
* Use technology to help instructors manage the learning process.
Reviews of Instructional Material:
* Reviews of technology based instructional material such as an interactive
computer program.
