  • 1.  Unsubscribe ?

    Dear Colleagues,

The past few issues of Mg-Ed-Dv have seen a number of unsubscribe requests.

    This is a listserv list.

To unsubscribe, you must unsub yourself. You subbed yourself, and you
    must unsub yourself.

Sending a note to the entire list to "unsubscribe" is merely to let
us know that you wish to unsubscribe.

To unsubscribe, send a proper command to the server.

    Send the command to

    Listserv@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU

Place the command AND NOTHING ELSE in the body of an email:

    SIGNOFF MG-ED-DV

All Listserv lists work the same way and use the same commands.
Listserv and other mailing list programs are a common tool of all
academic work today. This is not advanced programming. It is not
programming at all, but basic knowledge. If we intend to participate
in lists, tt is helpful to learn the basics of discussion list
    subscription management.

    Best regards,

  • 2.  Unsubscribe ?

    Ken et al,

I also have noticed several members sending
"Unsubscribe" notices to the entire list. I think
this is a very natural thing to do, psychologically.
    I will explain.

Having been a member of dozens of lists over the last
few years, I have noticed that even when the list
managers provide very clear instructions on how to
unsubscribe, many people do not use those
    instructions. Why?

Human beings (at least those I know) want things to be
easy. We don't want to have to look something up if
we can find an easier way. Hence, we use the most
convenient way to try to unsubscribe. Of course it
doesn't work! But many of us do it anyway.

Some list managers have solved this impatience problem
by including how to unsubscribe at the end of every
message. I believe that's the only way to prevent
people sending messages to an entire list. When we're
ready to leave, we don't want to go searching for
something; we just want to leave.

    Just an idea.
