  • 1.  Fee to Job Seekers

    Posted 10-19-1998 19:51
I have a friend who recently accepted a job through a personnel agency. Currently, it is a verbal acceptance. She was not aware that the fee was to be paid by the job seeker, not by the employer. My question is: At what point should the agency disclose that this is the way the operate? Shouldn't the job seeker sign a disclosure or agreement of some sort before they begin providing job leads? What has been your experience with this type of situation?

Thank you for your assistance and advice.

Anyone who advises you on this one had better be a lawyer.

It sounds to me like you're not getting the full story. The agency would
be putting itself at risk of lawsuits by engaging in unethical business
practices as you describe. Before leaping to the conclusion that the
agency is unethical, I'd check out the forms your friend signed when she
went to them and provided job history information. That your friend was
"not aware" does not mean the agency didn't inform her.
