UNION COLLEGE
Director
Graduate Management Institute
Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Director of the Graduate Management Institute (GMI) at Union College. GMI is responsible for delivering Union’s graduate programs in business and management and offers a limited number of rigorous masters-level degrees to a diverse and highly-qualified group of students. MBA and MS degrees are offered in accounting, management, health systems administration, international management, computer management systems, and industrial administration. While serving as chief academic and administrative officer of GMI, the Director also helps achieve the broader goals of a small, highly-selective liberal arts and engineering institution.
The Director is responsible for planning, budgeting, recruitment, fund-raising, and focusing the efforts of faculty, staff, and students on GMI priorities. Specific responsibilities include:
- strategically position GMI;
- develop and implement effective student recruitment strategies;
- lead GMI through the final phase of initial AACSB accreditation;
- develop and enhance faculty teaching and scholarly endeavors;
- facilitate creative review of the academic program, fostering appropriate curricular innovation;
- develop an effective communication and management information infrastructure;
- strengthen relationships with the alumni and business communities.
Candidates should have significant understanding of the disciplines commonly found in a college of business. Prior experience in academic administration or business with responsibility for personnel, programs, and/or resources is required, as is a collegial leadership style that values collaborative decision making. An appreciation of and ability to work with faculty and administrative colleagues in the liberal arts is also an important consideration.
An earned doctorate in either a business discipline or higher education administration and substantial managerial experience are desired. While the Director position is a full-time administrative appointment, MBA teaching opportunities are also available. Familiarity with the AACSB accreditation process and success developing and implementing graduate student recruitment strategies are qualifications of particular relevance to the short-term priorities of the position.
The position is available on January 1, 1999, or as soon thereafter as possible. The selection process will begin on October 15, 1998 and will continue until the position is filled. Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest, resume, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of three references to Professor Don Arnold, GMI Director Search, Union College, Lamont House Graduate Center, Schenectady, NY 12308. Professor Arnold is available via telephone (518-388-6302) or e-mail (ArnoldD@union.edu) to provide further information about the position.
Union College is committed to a program of affirmative action and equal employment opportunity. Women and persons of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
